NWA: Should Y 94.9 get "Jacked" up?

The new Fall Arbs are out. Y 94.9 has gone from low to lower. 2.7 to 1.9 and still the lowest rated FM station in the market. How much longer is Cumulus going to stick around with this failure?

What would you do for a format flip? Could an adult hits/"Jack" type station be the remedy? It could go after both Magic 107.9 AND 93.3 The Eagle demos? The "Jack" craze may have peaked a couple of years ago, but is still pretty steady in most markets. Alice 95.5 is doing well in nearby Springfield, MO.

Or could 94.9 be a good place for FM sports talk?

Your thoughts?

A lot of it could have to do with their signal. It doesn't really cover all of northwest arkansas with a strong clear signal. While it has the advantage of broadcasting in the Ft. Smith market, that market is on the edge of its coverage as well. I personally like the stations music most of the time, but the station name Y94.9 gets annoying after they say it several times in one spot. It's got a good format, and this market needs it. They just need a better signal and a better station name. I'm not against the Jack format, but i'd probably choose the 80's,90's and today over it.

By the way, Y 94.9 isn't the worst FM station in the Northwest Arkansas ratings at the moment, KURM FM is. It has a worse signal than Y 94.9 though.

I wrote that last comment without considering Magic 107.9. The stations basically have the same format. Magic gets a little soft for my tastes every now and then, but their 100,000 watt signal overpowers 94.9's 21,000 watt signal. Y 94.9 is gonna have a hard time getting good ratings competing with the strongest signal in the market for the same format. 94.9 should change to a different format and the Jack format might not be too bad of an idea.

I could be wrong, but the R&R website listed it as KURM-AM. Could be either just the AM signal or a combination of the AM/FM simulcast.

BTW, cool webpage you have. Do you have any airchecks of KEGL during its rock 40 days in the late 80s/early 90s? That section of your website seems to be down.

Yeah, I have a couple old KEGL airchecks. Send me a e-mail and i'll get em to ya.

The ratings I was looking at were the arbitron ratings. http://www.arbitron.com/radio_stations/home.htm
Go to "topline ratings" on the right side and then select Fayetteville on the dropdown list. Yeah, the station is a combo, but the AM gets better ratings. The AM was the original station and he added the small coverage FM a few years ago. KURM FM is on 100.3. It used to be located in Southwest Missouri before he bought it, then he moved it to Gravette. I don't see how the station ever made money in Southwest City. There is nothing there.
