NY Post: Curses Foiled Again For Stern

So Stern goes to sat. radio so he can say anything. Oops. Sorry, Howie,
but his new show could be Siriusly censored...

http://www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/62098.htm

Howard Stern may be coming down with a Sirius case of the bleeps. High-level executives of the satellite broadcaster are developing an internal standards-and-practices document that will set boundaries for Stern and other shock jocks, The Post has learned.

“It’s something that’s being taken very seriously," a Sirius source said. Stern's new show also is being broadcast on a time-delay, giving him the opportunity to censor the program — which he already has done. Stern moved to Sirius in part because satellite-radio services such as Sirius and XM — unlike free terrestrial radio — are not policed by the FCC, which spent years waging an indecency war against him.<P ID="signature">______________

Sirius is a large corporation run by uptight suits who have to answer to shareholders in addition to subscribers.

They probably also have a board of trustees, who are also a bunch of uptight suits.

Stern's show uncensored is bound to annoy those people. Hence, the call for standards.

bunk

They knew what they wanted and got what they wanted and they have no intention of muzzling stern.

this is a nothing story.

Agreed.

There is about a 0% chance that Sirius will begin to censor Stern broadcasts. Its definitely not in their best interests financially, and, until congress says otherwise, its not their legal obligation to do so.

If, and I mean IF cuz I don't believe it personally, Sirius has drafted its own version of FCC regulations, I'm sure its only a back-up plan in case the government decides to take action. Sirius would be fools to do something like that voluntarily. They knew what they were getting themselves into with bringing Stern & Co along for the ride.

You're absolutely correct. From day one, there was mention of the Howard Stern staff and Bubba the Love Sponge team attending a "standards and practices" meeting. This meeting reportedly pertained to issues of libel and illegal activities. For example, a host cannot have an act of beastiality or animal cruelty on the air. Individuals cannot smoke marijuana, or state that they are doing so while in the studio. This is not censorship. It has to do with legality, not censorship. Furthermore, anyone who has listened to either show that I mentioned above, knows that there has been no censorship. If Sirius planned on censoring either program, they would have done it already. I have heard claims that Stern duped his audience to get subscribers. The notion is ridiculous. Any subscriber can cancel his/her subscription at anytime. If a listener feels misled, they could cancel their sub. What good would this do Sirius? The NY Post story is total crap, but imagine the money Sirius would have to pay to get the names, Howard Stern and Sirius in a full page ad inside the Post, nevermind a cover. Maybe this was was the intention of Sirius; they have managed to keep Stern in the news.

It's amazing just how scared terrestrial radio is of satellite radio. I firmly believe that both Sirius and XM are worth the 14 bucks a month because NY radio is terrible. Sirius is worth it without Stern. The talk and music programming puts NY, AM and FM to shame. Terrestrial radio needs to focus on its own product and stop worrying about satellite. The NAB and Clear channel want the FCC to regulate satellite because their own product is so lame and they are complacent. The truth is, the NAB and Clear channel do not have a leg to stand on constitutionally, but they sure have a lot of pols in their pockets.
