NY radio has nothing to offer

Well that's if you want to hear rock.
No I'm not talking about the bunch of stations that play Classic rock or the bunch pop/dance in English Spanish and whatever.

I see the ratings #'s and have to wonder what rating people with Ipods and CD changers would get.

Oh yeah and HD didn't do much to change the issue either. I really don't think I am that far out there wanting to hear rock music from the past 5 years am I?

hey man im with you...as much as krock changed i can really use some korn/disturbed/godsmack alice in chains n stuff like that on a station...i know the Q has been playing music i have grown up on like metallica pearl jam n stp but they would NEVER play those bands..even incubus an staind would be nice too...but yea thats what my ipod is for i guess...

Well, I guess modern rock "doesn't bring in ratings and revenue" like other formats mentioned :X

WXRK's HD2 is a very good alternative/indie rock channel IMO. And I think they play AIC and Incubus from time to time, as do WRXP. If you're looking for Korn, Disturbed, and Godsmack, then your best bet is to find a station in the surrounding area, like WDHA.

I read this all the time, and wonder: What would they play? I began my career in rock radio, and I'd love to see it return to its heyday, but I recognize a very simple reality: After you get done with Creed and Korn, what do you build a 24/7 format around that can attract more than a 1 share? This is partly why MTV had to give up on playing videos.

My problem with rock music over the last 15 years is there is no one single modern artist who everyone knows and loves. There is no modern U-2, Springsteen, or Eagles. The music industry has moved away from creating that kind of artist. It's all individual. We all have our own favorites, our own personal playlists. How does mass appeal radio fit into that lifestyle?

And even if you COULD come up with a playlist that everyone could agree with, the next step is they all hate commercials. Four an hour would be too many to this audience. So combine the lack of artists with mass audience appeal and an inherent hatred of commercials, and this is why modern rock is either on college radio or the internet.

Let's just start with the music. Then we can deal with the radio issues of jocks or no jocks, commercial load, and interaction with listeners.

I'm with you , but I also like some of what ny radio has to offer, especially pulse 87. All I can say is that you can get modern stuff like that on www.wzbhrocks.com. As for the radio the only station I found playing Korn, and Killswitch ect. was some station in NJ from Seton Hall 89.5. I don't know the calls are.

I went to college in new jersey and i LOVED WDHA (105.5 if i remember correctly) it really was a great mix of recent rock and 90s and 80s as well....as far as the crowd hating commercials..they can sell sponsors in by giveaways and other fun programs that dont seem like commercials its just exposure....seton halls station is surprisngly good too. for a school ran by nuns..to hear death metal and all other types of stuff is a relief...these rock bands now really dont have a NY outlet to shoot for...

Even though I may be a dance music fan, I do feel for those of you that are modern rock fans (aka: Korn, Incubus, Green Day, etc.)

I feel that TheBigA nailed it with his comment about no single modern rocks artist that everyone knows, especially to those not core to the genre. As a non-rock fan, I can agree. 20 years ago, people could say Bruce, U-2, Aerosmith, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin and even non fans such as myself, would know who they were. In effect, I could relate to what you're going through because on the rock side, you wouldn't know most of our dance artists today (such as Lucas Prata, Kim Sozzi). Yet perhaps 20 years ago, you may have heard of Exposé, Judy Torres. Sure they may not have had as deep of a following as the "rock legends", but nevertheless for the dance music community, they mattered. Things have changed. I think the last time I would know of the majority of folks in the world of rock was during the grunge era (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden(

Do I think modern rock can work again? Possibly. But it has to take some sort of identity push to get the current artists to the level of the rock legends, that can transcend somehow past the core audience.

to the nay-sayers...lets keep in mind that up until last summer OZZFEST was the highest grossing summer concert series there ever was....all modern acts there...some metal..and the classic Ozzy either with sabbath or solo...and q104 doesnt move past about 3 or 4 solo ozzy singles which is a shame..because his solo career was great

If you pardon the expression, you sound like Joe Dirt with a mook makeover. And if this is what's left of whomever's actively demanding a new rock station in NYC, no wonder there's no hope--just as there was no hope for those jerkwater classic rockers that were left catering to the Joe Dirt marketplace a decade ago...

Who said this is what's left? However, you do make the mistake of putting your apparent dislike of that particular genre of rock ahead of any objective argument about the music/format.

It isn't so much a dislike of that particular genre, as much of an exasperation at how those making the arguments don't even sound like terribly high-level representatives of said genre.

Maybe it's because those with more grey matter and cultural savvy have stopped looking for such stuff on the radio, much less posting on boards like this one...

It seems like Michael Jackson was a unifying artist whose songs could fit any format. The day after Michael Jackson's death, there was an e-skip opening, and I heard stations of every format all over the US and Canada playing Michael Jackson music.
To me, NY radio has nothing much to offer above 87.7.

To put it simply, the music industry doesn't make artists like MJ any more. And they haven't for over 15 years. In my opinion THAT is the heart of the music industry's problem, and that problem has transfered to radio. Until someone starts recording mass appeal artists who can attract large audiences, the recording industry will continue to fall apart, and radio will continue to struggle.

That is, if such a "mass" exists anymore. Or rather, these days it's the customizable medium (say, the iPod/iPhone/iWhatever) that's "mass appeal", more than the artists per se...
