NY Sport Networks

Does New York need 4 sport networks? Before YES and SNY came around their were only 2 MSG and FOX Sports NY. The reason MSG and FOX Sports NY which is now named MSG+ are still around is because they have the rights to the Knicks, Devils, and Rangers. Its surprising that SNY won't pick up another pro team or two to go along with the Mets. All SNY has is Mets and college sports and recently UCONN. YES has Yankees and Nets.

Maybe the reason why SNY hasn't picked up another pro team is because the broadcast rights to any other pro teams aren't up for bid right now.

there was one sport network that shut down that one my friend was named empire

i think back in 2003 they shut down

It seems that SNY does have interest with the NY Islanders as I read this from
Wikipedia:
Mets ownership has had discussions with the Islanders about buying the team, a possible sign that they may broadcast Islanders games on SNY.

I am not sure how long ago that was from its just what I read.

As for contracts when do current contracts with MSG and MSG+ end?
Knicks (would they consider moving to SNY?)
Rangers (would they consider moving to SNY?)
Islanders (not sure)
Devils (YES was in talks with them but they resigned with MSG)

The Knicks and Rangers are owned by the Cablevision, the same company that owns MSG.

The Islanders are getting 20M/year from Cablevison and I read that the deal runs until 2030.

That Islanders deal is long. Didn't think they did contracts for that long.

The original deal signed back in 1980 with the then-SportsChannel was supposed to expire in 2012.

Also I think the Devils considered going to SNY but they resigned right before SNY launched.

College sports are popular. SNY is the home of UCONN which isn't NY sports. With UCONN going with SNY that made all the cable companies in CT pick up SNY that didn't have the network on their channel line-up.

i thought empire was bought out by fox sports which turned all the old sports regional networks to fsn new england etc

Empire was a western NY sports network that folded when owner Adelphia went belly up, their big catch was Buffalo Sabre hockey which I believe is now on a western new york feed of MSG.

If you take away a NYC based sports network, where do those rights go? As is, most of the NYC based RSNs have to set up alternate feeds to cover for all the sports teams that are based in New York City.
