NY Times Co. to sell its TV stations

Kinda suprising that this hasn't yet been mentioned on this board yet, but The New York Times Company announced late Tuesday that they plan to sell their 9 TV stations. (More here from AP) Anyone want to start the speculation on a buyer? This may or may not be a possibility, but I want to think Clear Channel could consider at least some of the stations, if only because they own WHO Radio in Des Moines and WHO-TV is one of the TV stations being sold by NYT.

Interesting that most of their stations are in the Midwest and South Central US and are in relatively smaller markets.
 
My question would be...how are they going to sell them? In a bundle or individually? In a bundle would be fine, but there might be a problem with selling them individually...why? Because all their master control centers are coming out of one station (WTKR Norfolk Virginia.) Where they are not known as Master Control, but Digital Control (same damn thing, different name.) If NYTimes sells them individually, I guess all the other stations will have to fire up their own Master Control again...

Writers note: I think it's the worst idea in the world having all your master control in one building. No matter how big your company is, or how much you can save, you should keep your MC in your own station. There have been plenty of times I've set and watched our local NYTimes station in black for long periods because their MC is in Norfolk, and not right here in the area. So the operator doesn't have the control as he would if he was at the station in question.
 
I'd love to see their facility in Norfolk.. it must be quite the site.

These two could go to Gray Communications as this market is right up their alley.

Also...Don't forget former NBC O&O's WCMH 4 Columbus, OH and WNCN 17 Raleigh-Durham, NC as well.

Or are they keeping those?

If not, I would suspect Gray would end up with WCMH while WNCN could probably go to Gannett.

Thoughts anyone?

NYT never owned them -- earlier this year, Media General acquired these stations (and Providence's WJAR and Birmingham's WVTM) from NBC.

Heh...No. :) *LOL!* But I could've sworn NBC sold those stations to the NY Times. Guess.not....

As for the rest of the stations listed (minus WNCN of course), I still think they could go to Gray. Gannett would be another good candidate (Especially with the Oklahoma City stations on the block).

NY Times... Media General... start to blur together after a while. Especially with all the "NewsChannel"'s both owners use.

(Actually, did some network sell some OTHER stations to the New York Times recently? That sentence does seem to ring a bell...)

Hey, maybe the Times could sell all these stations TO Media General. That would solve your problems!
