Consolidation has killed localism outside of news or sports, youtube might be the new farm system. There are no more horror flick or afternoon kids block hosts.
Nope...YouTube is what killed localism. There is no local anymore. The kid block hosts, for the most part, went away in the 70s.
Exactly. Localism died long ago. I grew up in the 1980s and we had no local kid block hosts. The indie stations had their kids clubs, but they ran nothing but Fox and syndicated cartoons. Honestly and sadly, Gen-Xers like me viewed the old-time kid show hosts as sort of dorky relics from our parents' childhoods. They'd complain about us watching He-Man, Transformers, or even The Smurfs while waxing nostalgic about creepy-looking clowns introducing old black-and-white cartoons. Snotty-Nosed Typical 1980s Kid wanted none of that, we just wanted nonstop animated action.
By the way, just to be on-topic: I have no problem with the choice of Seth Meyers as Late Night host. I felt Jimmy Fallon has really improved his screen presence hosting Late Night, and Meyers will likely do the same.
