NYC Arbitron Radio Ratings: February 2013

XCountry285 said:
WEPN-FM 98.7 FM is the lowest rated FM.

Not in Men 18+ or Men 18-34 or Men 25-54. It is on the rise in billings, too.

WPAT is not finding its niche.

WPAT, with it's new format, is up 280% in Persons 18-49 since November's low. It has obviously found an opportunity.

WEPN-FM again not doing so well and I can see it fixing its station, flipping formats or at least being sold off to Cumulus or someone else.

WEPN is still owned by Emmis and is under an LMA with Disney. ESPN is a brand, and much of the value of having the brand on a good signal on FM is brand enhancement. Disney gets that. They are achieving good results, and now have both the English and the Spanish ESPN on in NY.

WEPN-FM has low ratings as does WFAN-FM they aren't much better at 2.5 share that's a drop from their last book at 3.7 in which it was climbing prior that's a major drop.

WFAN has very seasonal ups and downs. February was not a great sports month in a number of markets... it's just bounce. Again, this is one of the top 10 billing stations in the whole country and it ain't movin'.

I don't understand how Lite FM is #1 all the time, they're music is old and boring to me...

I would not listen much either, but I am not a 25-54 female. Are you? 'cause that is their target. And they superserve it.

KTU should go 100% Dance music I don't understand why they haven't...or even adding dubstep into the mix. Nash is doing well, I hope they continue to do well because its a great station.

OK, so you like the station with the 1.6 share, but KTU, which is the 7th in billings in NY and is 5th or 6th on average in 18-49 share ought to change formats? I don't get that logic.

Do you have the billing numbers for 92.3? Maybe that would explain why it survives even with sagging ratings.

About 16th last year. Not great, not totally horrible.

.

Perhaps CBS should put a modern rock format on 92.3, before Cumulus gets one going. Not necessarily a revived K-Rock, as it had not done well since Howard Stern left. Possibly more like their highly successful alternative rocker, KROQ, in L.A.
The mainstream rock format on WWSK 94.3 The Shark on LI is doing remarkably well. Even though it has been on the air for only a few months on a mediocre signal, their ratings are almost a tie with heritage classic rock station WBAB. Maybe that is another indication that there is room for a second rock station in New York, that leans younger than Q104.3.

I started a discussion on the Alternative board on which the number of stations in the format are on a decline when crossover is skyrocketing. Lots of people there say that with all this crossover, that makes a full-time alternative less necessary. That's probably what CBS was thinking when they flipped RXP 2.0 to WFAN. And don't forget that they own Fresh, which was responsible for breaking a lot of alternative artists to the mainstream. I agree that they should put a modern rock format on 92.3 (especially when I don't get 103.9 where I live) but I don't see that happening. Funny enough, the K-rock they have on HD2 sounds nothing like the one that they had on the air back in 2009.

The real news is in news-talk programming. WABC may remain slightly ahead of WNYC-FM as a stand alone station,

Yes it is! When WABC can't blow away a station that rebroadcasts a talk show whose hosts have already retired, that is news!

It's simple. XCountry285 will continue to make the same exact arguments, logic be dammed. He keeps saying these things even though we keep bringing these same exact facts up.

At this point I don't think I want CBS to own a modern rock format if it ever returns. They did a bad job programming the 2007-2009 K-Rock, and now they don't seem to be fans of the format anyway. By my count, they have about 3 or so left nationwide, and only KROQ in LA looks to be the only one of any value strictly because of it's history (and obviously they still bill well).

WOR is a mess right now. I hope they have more than Limbaugh up their sleeve. I actually detest most of their personalities right now. 12-4 just seems like infomercials. Steve Malzberg was the last good thing on there, in my opinion. If I were them, I'd bring back Glenn Beck. 1.2 is embarrassing for that type of station and their history. I'm a younger listener in my 20's and I used to enjoy the station when they had Beck, Savage and Malzberg, but now there's nothing on there that interests me.
There's no question that ABC is the go-to station if you're a fan of that format. Even though he's hit or miss, I enjoy Imus. I hated Geraldo before he come on radio and wanted to hate his show, but he's not that bad, in my opinion, and I've come to like his show better than Mark Simone. The Rush, Hannity, Levine block has been proven to be a success with that audience.
Rock is my preferred music genre and while I like q104.3, I like wwsk the shark's playlist a lot better.

Can you post the 2012 billing $$ for the top 20 NY stations ?

How was Fresh doing while RXP2.0 was on the air? If it wasn't hurting Fresh then I could see a return, but if it was then I wouldn't bring it back because I'd want to protect my stations.

Trying to fix this.....

I agree with David on THAT one. 'KTU does well for their audience. They may not be a dance music fan's "cup o' tea" but in terms of what they are doing, why change what works? As much as I want a dance/EDM station, the last station I am bothering (and quite honestly, why even bother) is 'KTU.

Ok, this is Nash's 1st book and they get a 1.6. But I don't really think you need to worry since Cumulus is making this their country brand so no matter how high or low the station gets in future books, as long as it does good in other markets and are getting the billings, that's what matters. It's that "Radio Disney" argument because no matter if they get an 0.1 on WQEW they have their brand parked so it means SOMETHING to them.

Now....DUBSTEP? This is where I am argue that for MODERN ROCK/ALTERNATIVE radio, you can HAVE it :) IMHO, that has the "angst" and "youth revolution" that is a perfect brand for that side, NOT a dance/EDM station. And that's what killed it in Denver.

Guess not. ???

Since not getting any help here i emailed david hinckley since in the past he posted the $$ #s in his article....he sent back saying he will see what he can do.

A company named BIA does an annual survey of radio station billing, which I think they release in the spring. The last couple of years, All-News WTOP Washington was the nation's top billing station, with KIIS Los Angeles and WCBS, WINS, WFAN, WLTW and Z100 New York consistantly in the top 10.

I haven't seen any articles quoting a BIA survey so far this year.

BIA provides a database of radio, TV and newspapers to subscribers under the name of Media Access Pro. They update facilities, staff, formats, ratings, billing, population, coverage area and such on a daily basis.

The 2012 revenue data was released to subscribers last week.

If you want the service, plan to pay an amount in the thousands.

You can get the quarterly print version, with a lot less data, for about $3,100 a year, or about $1400 for a single issue.
