CC's next move? CC has two CHRs & a Hip Hop station. Move KTU to dance to kill off Now once & for all!

CC has 2 chr's? Not in NYC they don't.

Actually they do since WKTU has been reporting to the Mediabase Top 40/Mainstream panel since 2011!

But they arent on the billboard top 40 panel which has a total of 159 radio stations:
New Orleans WEZB
New York WHTZ, WNOW
Norfolk, Va. WVHT

As mentioned they dont play top 40 "rock" hits like the recent imagine dragons & fall out boy songs.

KTU, as I have told you before, has a quite separate listener base, and is one of the market's top billers.

Industry pundits may call them both CHRs, or may say that one is mainstream CHR and the other is rhythmic CHR, but the fact is that both stations deliver ratings and revenue and are totally unlikely to change. Station owners don't care what people call their format... it's not part of the decision making... they care about the ratings and revenue.

And why would WKTU give up nearly a 6 share in 18-49 to go after a station, WNOW, that has just over a 3 share on average?

They don't play those two but they did play Don't You Worry Child and last year, Somebody That I Used to Know was a BIG hit on KTU.

Dont you worry child isnt really a rock song its more a rhythmic & somebody that i used to know had a radio edit w/kimbra that Z100 also played cause it had more of dance beat set to the background as opposed to the album version that i think PLJ played.

IMO the big story is the precipitous fall of Hot 97. The one-time #1 is six months away from being the 3rd choice option of Power, Now, and Hot.

They lost against Power. It looks like they might lose to Now too.

Time to either fire all the staff and start fresh if they want to stay targeting 18-34 or change the playlist to more classic material to try to draw away the younger half of WBLS's audience.

Hot is ahead of Power and way ahead of Now in 18-34. They are generally second to fourth in the demo, with WSKQ, WHTZ, WKTU and even WLTW bouncing around in the 2 to 5 position, where there are very small average differences.

The summer period books are generally not as useful for analysis as the rest of the year.

Interestingly, Radio Online lists WKTU as a Hot AC like Fresh and WPLJ. You have to wonder how much of this labeling is just arbitrary.

I think all this confusion just goes to show that KTU is a format that's tailored specifically to New York, and is therefore difficult to classify by national industry standards. It's more current-oriented than a typical Rhythmic AC, but older-skewing than a typical Rhythmic CHR. It's more pop-oriented than both of the above, but more strictly rhythmic than a typical mainstream CHR (and also older skewing). It's definitely not a standard Hot AC, but it seems to target the same age range, and similarly emphasizes songs that are already established CHR hits with adult appeal. I guess if I had to come up with a label for it, it would be "Rhythmic Adult CHR".

In the July 18-34 ratings, WQHT made an impressive #3 showing, with WWPR trailing at #5. Power is beating Hot in the overall ratings, but only by a tick. So clearly, the ability to attract young listeners is not the problem, if there even is a problem.
