NYC broadcaster Bernie Wagenblast comes out as transgender

This is undoubtedly true. Twitter...or X or whatever it's named this week...has become just one example of the underlying hatred and assaults on the LGBTQIA+ community. Places like 4Chan were always there, but sort of lurking in the shadows out of plain site. Once the venom was released in full view on a site with much wider use and awareness, it became a cesspool...though that might be an insult to cesspools.

Bernie, I just want to say I am proud of you. As a trans woman myself, I understand how deep voice dysphoria can cut, especially when your voice is your life as it is in radio.

I came out on RD more than three years ago after Dori Monson in Seattle got himself removed from Seahawks broadcasts for transphobic remarks. Voices like yours—on the air and in our national dialogue—are so tremendously important because we are so often drowned out, and our voices have the potential to carry hope to those who need it most.

It is unfortunate that for so many of us, coming out and being open about who we are requires so much communications strategy. There are many people out there who, for a myriad of reasons that are beyond the scope of this thread and sometimes not beyond the scope of this discussion board, just don't get it. It is true that for some people around us, it can be very hard to take that news, and not necessarily because of political, religious, or cultural beliefs: sometimes, it's a parent who can't let go of a vision of their kid in their head or a lack of understanding of something that may feel only relatively recent in its visibility.

All we can do is be the light—and sometimes that requires being visible and proactive. Given other issues in my life, I've had a long time to think about what that looks like. It's daunting. And that's a fraction of what it is for you, Bernie.

Transition may be a journey and a constant one at that, but it is also a joyous one for those of us who have been forced to bear not being ourselves for far too long. It is worth sharing not only for all the reasons I mention above but because who doesn't want to share their joy in life?
