Certainly some interesting material in there...

Regarding WNYW coming in first on 5.2, I note the transmission over the WWOR transmitter is on a lower frequency than the one over WNYW's own transmitter. In other words, when you did the channel scan, 5.2 would have scanned in first.

Regarding WNET and the main PBS programming showing up on 13.3.. that's particularly strange. According to the captures on Trip's site, the "program numbers" are essentially "backwards" on WNET -- the PBS program is Program #5, V-Me is Program #4, and 13 Kids is Program #3. However, the Program # is supposed to be invisible to the viewer. (the PSIP Terrestrial Virtual Channel Table is supposed to cross-reference the Program # to a Virtual Channel like 13.1, 13.2, or 13.3) So as long as PSIP is set up to map PBS to virtual channel 13.1, it should come up on 13.1 on your box regardless of what the Program # is.

Now, it's not particularly unusual to find a DTV station whose PSIP generator isn't working.* Many receivers, when they see this, will create a "virtual virtual channel" -- will tune a channel with its RF channel number and its Program #. For example, if WNBC's PSIP generator died, many receivers would see NBC on 28.3; New York Nonstop on 28.4, and Universal Sports on 28.5. (WNBC's RF frequency is 28, and the Program Numbers for their three programs are 3, 4, and 5)

WNET's RF and virtual channels are both 13 -- but again, the program numbers are 3, 4, and 5. If their PSIP generator were to die, I'd expect to see PBS on 13.5, not 13.3.

However, I suppose when you did the channel scan, 13 Kids would have scanned in first, followed by V-Me and PBS. Maybe your box ignores the minor channel number in the transmitted VCT and numbers minor channels in the order scanned? From Trip's listings, WNET is the only station in New York whose Program #s are "out of order". (where the lowest Program # doesn't correspond to the lowest minor virtual channel) Again, in the ATSC/PSIP standard that should make absolutely no difference -- but maybe Magnavox didn't read that part!

* it is however unusual at a major station in market #1!

There are a few more updates:

2.2...CBS NY +...News, weather, traffic (on air as of this week) (Quick review and my opinion: The top stories are barely given 4 minutes and are repeated 4 times an hour; when weathercaster states "local conditions" you sometimes get numbers for areas throughout the tri-state area, other times you just get radar maps; traffic just shows maps and a few camera images without any identification, there is no audio except for a music bed that is not long enough so that you hear it end and restart. The browser window on the right looks too much like an ad rather than news headlines. I don't foresee viewers watching for more than a quarter hour. I at least hope that they will break format when there is breaking news.)

9.3...WWOR Bounce, however at this time they are just simulcasting 9.1.

17.1...WEBR...The Bridge, however, the signal is frozen

24.1...WASA Estrella TV, strangely enough it is also still on WPIX -- any idea what is in store for 11.2?

32.1...CCTV News (English language)
32.2...CCTV 4 (Chinese language)
32.3...CCTV (Spanish language)

47.2...Exitos (Spanish language)

63.7...WMBC Aliento (Spanish language)

Do we know for sure that WPIX 11.2 is dropping Estrella? Maybe they could pick up MeTV, assuming there are no conflicting interests with Antenna TV.

No idea at all, that's why I asked. Didn't mean to imply a change was in the works, however it is odd for Estrella to be on two stations where the transmitters are within walking distance. MeTV and Antenna TV are competitors, yet both are on other stations together. Since PIX and Antenna TV are both part of Tribune, it may pose a problem, however there is also a connection between MeTV and This -- which is also carried by PIX. It would be great to have all three together as they complement one another.
