NYC Marathon Runs To ESPN

Effective with this November's race, the New York City marathon will be carried on ESPN - actually, ESPN2, since their big brother will likely be airing a five-hour "Sunday NFL Countdown" show - and locally on WABC-TV.

The article says ESPN "points out" that this would be "the first time the race will have been covered live nationally in its entirety on TV in almost 20 years". Didn't NBC carry the marathon nationally in recent years?

NBC Universal Sports did carry the NYC Marathon in full, but the main network has limited coverage to a two-hour (or less) condensed replay - an arrangement that will continue with ESPN/ABC, but on a much bigger stage (er, bridge) to start.

Couldn't they just air the last 10 minutes so you can see who crosses the finish line? I can't imagine sitting there for hours watching people run. "Number 42 is 2 steps ahead of #68. Oh wait...now 68 just passed 43"....not exactly riveting sports. ;D Kind of like watching Nascar I guess...

It probably won't be long until New York City Marathon runners are wearing uniforms sporting sponsor logos, just like NASCAR drivers...

Anything but riveting. NBC, whether on the NYC or Olympic marathon(or triathlon) coverage, likes to use tape-delay to cover the beginning and ending of a race as though it were live, then fill the remainder with 'up close and personal' pieces on runners, as we seee brief glimpses of them during the race. ('As Slobovowitz reached mile 23, the heartbreak of his years in a gulag, where he lost his eyebrows, seemed light years away...')

NBC Sports Network could have showed the whole Marathon.
CBS Sports Network (Which REALLY needs non-collegiate sporting events in the worst possible way) not only could've shown the whole marathon but could've offered pre & post race coverage as well (Somehow I doubt NBC Sports Network could do any pre/post race coverage due to other programming commitments)

Cheers & 73 ;D
