David, how did WINS do in 25-54 with the simulcast? Judging from the 6+ numbers, the only mistake Audacy made by flipping 92.3 was they didn’t do it sooner.

I think WINS going from 3.0 to 3.5 to 4.2 is note worthy. WCBS-AM fell from 3.2 to 2.1 to 2.2 so some of WINS audience increase appears to be new listeners not taken from WCBS-AM

Based on cume, it seems that the increase was as much or more due to increased TSL, and not "new" listeners.

This is a difficult matter to evaluate since the two stations were separate previously, and the transition period of any format shift or consolidation can send ambiguous results. Add in the Thanksgiving holiday variants, I'm thinking that we will have to look after January to really see the effect of the WCBS AM & FM combo.

For those not familiar with the procedure in Nielsen, when two stations simulcast, the licensee gets to select under which call letter set the listing appears. The two CBS news stations selected the AM as the listing calls. In LA, KRCD / KRCV chose KRCD to list both, and Entravision picked one of a total of 3 FMs to list under... with one of them being from an adjacent market!

What is the billing WINS vs WCBS? In the long run, is it worth keeping two news stations? Is WCBS going to be a sacrificial lamb for sports betting, when the time is right?

Per the thread with the previous month’s book, if some recall, WNYL’s ratings as an alternative got renamed as WINS-HD2. It went from 0.8 last book (which included the tail end of the move to HD2) to not encoding at all.

Interestingly enough WDHA and The Peak both rimshots and play rock are in the ratings.
It's not really that interesting. Those stations consistently show up at the bottom of the NYC ratings with some of the lower power ethnic/religious AMs, other rimshot stations, and WBAI.

Apparently, moving the transmitter of WXBK 94.7 (The Block) closer to New York has not helped their overall ratings. They remain mired at 1.4 (actually down from October). In the Nassau-Suffolk ratings, where their signal has presumably improved a bit, the station is still at .6, just ahead of WKTU's HD2 channel.

The Block may become WCBS 880 @ 94.7

A signal move isn't going to take listeners away from competitors. That's where marketing of the station's existence has to also happen, and it seemingly has not, despite the big names Audacy has brought to it.

Or perhaps it hasn't helped in the 6+but it may help in reaching certain zip codes. The success of a station isn't always measured by Nielsen.

On the other hand, the big name talent may help with some ad clients. Have you heard any of that talent doing host sponsorships? This is where the presentation value exceeds the audience value.

Not likely. 880 was always the "suburban" news station, with WINS the Manhattan and the Boroughs one due to signals. 94.7 is a limited signal and does not match the WCBS AM focus.

So much seasonal listening went to 106.7 in the period that I'd be very cautious about drawing conclusions regarding any other station's performance.

The other obvious problem is branding. They can't use WCBS-FM.
That's irrelevant, as any listener to KCBS (who pays attention) can tell you. The top-of-hour legal ID says "KCBS-AM, KFRC-FM and HD-1, San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, an Audacy Station" going into the gong and the network news. For the rest of the hour the positioner is "All News 106-9 and AM 740 KCBS". (Which keeps the heritage KFRC calls tied up, and doesn't necessitate upsetting the apple cart down at KCBS-FM in Los Angeles. Why does it have to be significantly different in New York? Worst case, WXBK gets changed to more harmonious calls, such as WCBX, WCBF, WZBS, anything that would slip past the average listener.

The problem is WCBS-FM uses WCBS-FM as its brand. Comparing it to KCBS in SF & KCBS-FM in LA (or for bonus points, WBBM in Chicago) is an apples and oranges comparison. In the case of NYC, two WCBS-branded stations on the FM dial could cause confusion, although there are other alternatives to make this small issue a non-issue entirely.

I will posit that I am not sure WXBK simulcasting 880 would be worthwhile anyway.

WINS was the stronger brand even before the simulcast on 92.3. If Audacy was concerned about further erosion at WCBS after WINS added 92.3, a simulcast at 94.7 would have probably came in short order. WXBK, despite signal issues, provides Audacy profitable sales demos in NYC and is a strong justification for its continued existence despite the lackluster ratings (which again, I fault Audacy with poor advertising of the station). And then you have to factor if in 3-5 years there will be an audience in NYC for two all news stations, regardless of the band. I am willing to bet on "no".
