NYC / Paul Van Dyk / Electric Zoo!

Over the past two weeks or so, New York City had two MAJOR dance music events going on....

On August 29th, Paul Van Dyk performed in Central Park (Rumsey Playfield) with tickets going for $75. The place was PACKED!! There HAD to be thousands of people all gathered around as Paul Van Dyk was spinning his brand of trance to the masses!

This past Labor Day Weekend (Sat 9/5 & Sun 9/6) had Electric Zoo over on Randall's Island (where the Triboro/RFK Bridge goes over...between Manhattan/The Bronx and Queens). Tickets ranged from $55 in advance to about $220 for two days, with VIP going for extra. Electric Zoo had four areas of world known DJ's (3 tents and one main stage) such as Armin Van Buuren, David Guetta, Ferry Corsten, Markus Schultz, Deadmau5, Roger Sanchez, Benny Benassi, just to name a few, spinning to the masses. The event was also PACKED...am guesstimating about 40,000+ people in attendance both days!
Both events were HUGE successes.

Attending these events, and reading into this, there is indeed a bigger message here; that despite a bad economy, unemployment up and jobs down, people were WILLING to spend the money to attend events like this! And this doesn't even count concessions (such as water, drinks, food, etc.) If there were any doubts about the dance music crowd being in attendance for events like this....you can squash it because the community came out in FORCE! To which this is something that corporations (soft drinks, autos, apparel, travel, etc.) should be paying CLOSE attention to because there is a community that is now being recognized as a financial driving force!

Locally with Beatstock taking in large crowds a couple of weeks ago, plus the Pulse 87 telethon that occurred along with the events above, it goes to show that for dance music....people WILL spend the money. If there were any doubts from the naysayers and haters...the proof is here! And to that, I don't see any reason why terrestrial radio continues to ignore this genre for the most part because there is FINANCIAL OPPORTUNITY HERE! It's ready to be grabbed...just a matter of a corporation taking the bull by the horns and reigning it in for their profits.

Thank you! :)

Great post Tony!
The more events the merrier as a market as big as New York can support them, and it gets more people noticing this crazy thing called Dance music.

Capacity at Randalls Island shows are 20,250. I was flying down to Orlando on Tuesday Morning and saw 2 people wearing Electric Zoo t's. Videos I've seen look great.

Electric Zoo was FANTASTIC!!!

I had to work Sunday so I could only attend the Saturday performances. But based on the music going on, the energy of the people just dancing around, pumping their hands and fists in the air and having FUN (I saw NO altercations whatsoever) and the DJ's keeping that crowd pumped, it was a spectacular event. It was one that actually brought me to tears there, because it was just a culmination of people enjoying themselves and enjoying life! :)

It was OUR "Woodstock!" :)
