NYC radio on Long Island

I was driving on the LIE over the weekend and had 102.7 on the radio. Near or just east of the Nassau/Suffolk border I noticed that for about a mile 102.7 completely faded out into static, and then came back as I continued east. I noticed something similar when driving back that night, but this time I had 95.5 on the dial, and again, reception got very weak and almost faded out completely for a short time. Any idea what this could have been? Is there something in that area that would cause interference?

In the area where you had the interference with 102.7 was probably near the WBAB-FM (102.3) stick around exit 51.

When you had the intereference with 95.5, you were probably a little further east near exit 53, and were getting interference from WIGX-FM (94.3).

It does seem NYC radio stations penetrate further south in NJ than east on LI. Most can be picked up until exit 69 on the parkway, while on LI once you're past 112 it's pretty hard to get a signal.
