NYC TV Transmitter

Hi, I was just courious. Is all of the NYC TV stations transmitt from Empire State Building right now instead of Armstrong Tower or Conde Nast Tower? Also, is WNJB DTV channel ( transmitt from New Jersey or at the ESB?

I think so, with the exception of WFUT (on Conde Nast), WNJU (First Mountain in Orange). Other channels: WNJN/WMBC from NJ, WTBY/WRNN from Newburgh, WLIW, WFTY, WLNY from Long Island, WEDW/WSAH from Connecticut. WSAH, of course, wants to move to the ESB.

WNJB comes from New Jersey at this time, but has a pending application to move to Conde Nast.

EDIT: Correction, WNYE-DT also comes from Conde Nast.

Most NYC TV still comes from the Empire State Building. A number of stations will be reducing the analong power to 50% while their transmitters are converted to the digital standard. Many stations use two transmitters running at 50% each into a combiner for redundancy. When analog goes away, the remaining analog half of some transmitters will then be converted.
I am not sure about the location of the WNJU Transmitters. The digital is very difficult to pick up, if your digital antenna is aimed at NYC. WNET also has a very difficult digital signal.
Many of the NJPBA stations are running at reduced power because of budget cutbacks.

In Central Queens, with clear line-of-sight to the Empire State Building and Conde Nast, I often have trouble receiving 13 (especially) and 47. On the other hand, NJN and even WMBC come in with a strong signal. I've also never been able to pull in a picture from WLIW. Signal strength varies from 0-30% but no picture.

I live in Jersey City with clear line of sight to the ESB. I can get WNET but usually only if I aim the antenna in just the right direction. Other channels like WNBC and WCBS are not nearly as sensitive. I get no signal at all from WLIW-DT. Analog WLIW isn't too great either.

I think WNET is running digital at low power until just before the switchover. I recall reading that somewhere a few months ago. Isn't WLIW also managed by WNET? Wouldn't surprise me if they're running at low power over there as well.

WLIW actually comes in with a stronger signal in analog than WMBC, for instance, but WMBC comes in pretty flawlessly for me in digital, and I've never had problems with WNJM, even though the analog signal for me on 50 was also always pretty good (58 also came in for me where I am with a weaker signal but no digital reception from them so far).

Just as a matter of curiosity and not anything else, the PBS station licensed to Montclair hasn't been WNJM since 1994. It's WNJN. Obviously we know what you meant though. :)

And yes, WNET and WLIW are co-owned.

WMBC analog transmits from somewhere in the mountains, fairly close to Newton, NJ. WMBC-DT transmits from the same tower as WNJN-DT.

I live in Northern Brooklyn. Can see Manhattan from my roof yet I can pick up the New Jersey digital stations easier. WFME-29 (big waste of space) and WNJN-47 DT 36 I can get with full signal strength yet except for WABC-7 which I can get 4 green bars I have trouble picking up the other digital stations. They keep dropping out. It makes no sense why I can get the New Jersey stations which are further away easier. 2, 4, 5, 9 and 11 on good days come in at a yellow signal. 13 I can get for nothing. Barely one bar.

That's kind of odd, maybe your antenna is pointed away from Manhattan and towards the south? All of the main NYC signals (2-11) seem to have intermittent dropouts, especially late at night, but most of the time they have no problems. 13 has been the worst of all, as they're running at, I believe, 25% power at most to "save money" before the switchover. And since they also manage 21, they may be doing the same there which would explain why that station never comes in (even WFME makes its way over to me in Central Queens sometimes even though the analog signal was almost nonexistent, whereas I would get a watchable analog picture of 21).

Interestingly, 47 gives me problems from NJ. Anyone know if they're running lower power than the others? The best signal of the Spanish-language stations for me is actually Telefutura, even better than 41.
