NYQUIL

I get sick and tired.
Sometimes I really get sick and tired, especially at night.

Don't you get sick and tired?

Oh... ok - maybe I should be more specific.
I get so sick and tired of radio stations that choose not to do the best they can, ALL the time. Normally, I try to always speak positively and present the good things about Phoenix radio and present to people a different point of view, but sometimes you just have to point out a few flaws and make people think "hmmmm..." hoping at least ONE person acts on your ideas in a positive way.

Now, I remember a short while back, maybe a few days / weeks ago, I mentioned something along the lines of stations bringing more liveliness and excitement, and possibly doing things like teaming certain on-air personalities up together and making things seem more "party" like. I've also mentioned that maybe on Friday's / Holidays, on-airs could invite extra people into the studio or have a cookout / get together live on the air (similar to how it's done when on-airs broadcast live from outside locations) or just think up something creative to bring that live, family, fun filled atmosphere along with the music. This is possible to do on ANY station with the right people, if done the right way.

Sometimes I get sick and tired of radio stations that remain mediocre and make the decision themselves to not be all that they can be, especially at night! Have you heard a majority of the A.M. stations at night? It's like they are not even trying at times.

Speaking of A.M, (impressed with my nice transition here?? I'm good, aren't I?) While keeping in mind everything I said about on-airs teaming up and tag teaming to bring a family / live, fun atmosphere, I want you to take time one Friday morning and listen to A.M. 550 KFYI, between 7 and 10am. This is a PERFECT example of what I'm talking about here! If you hear how Barry Young and the entire staff conducts this show on Friday, you'll see how much more entertaining you can make (even an already fun and entertaining) show! Now I must say Barry Young and his entire staff really know how to conduct a show and do it very well!

Also, if you take a listen to any of the few really good morning shows that are left, they also provide a live and perfect demonstration of how the right people teamed up on the right station can bring that live, fun, family atmosphere. Examples; Beth & Bill on 99.9 - Just PERFECT together, for the format they're on. BIG BOY'S Neighborhood on Power 106 L.A. - Perfect for their format as well. I'm sure I'm missing a few, but I think I've pretty much made my point. We do have some hosts that do very well by themselves, but there are certain times of the day (and year) when it's nice to have that "tag team action", or that interactive, party / family feel. I'm not saying that this is necessary on every format, but for those who are sick and tired of boring, mundane themed formats and line ups, the cure could easily be found IF the ideas I've presented were taken into consideration more often and done the correct way.

Have you ever noticed how many syndications always have one main star of the show, but at the same time they have extra "background" members who interact and make it sound like a team? Have you noticed how much better people usually sound on the air when they are teamed up with other on-airs to debate, talk, host, present contests, interact with callers.... etc. on any show? We are all aware of the state radio is in today as a whole, but this doesn't mean people can't still get creative and make the most of it. I'm just putting out my ideas. Who knows,

M A Y B E , i n  2 0 1 0 . . .

Something I say could inspire at least one person to think and do something different, be successful with it, and start a whole new trend. You never know. These words could be the thing to indirectly create the actions necessary to cure the situation that's presently causing many (radio) people to feel sick and tired.

Enjoy your day, and may we all get better soon.
