In looking over the article, While there are definite clouds surrounding the future of "American Idol", I can't see where as the thread title states. "American Idol to be canceled"

Nope, because it isn't. It may very well end after this season because Cowell wants to move on, but it's not being cancelled by Fox. If anything, they'd try to keep it going without him and fail miserably.

I'm not sure "A.I." would 'fail miserably' without Cowell (though he IS practically irreplaceable), but I agree that Fox would definitely keep the show going as long as possible in spite of him. The show's too profitable not to try.

And Idol has outlasted all of the knockoffs and imitators before--not even a revived "Star Search" could hang with it. So even if "X-Factor" makes it to the air, neither Idol's demise or X's success is guaranteed.

Not So Fast!

I suspect that Fox, the producers of "American Idol", and Simon Cowell will do their best to come to terms on a deal that will keep Cowell as one of the judges. And I think they will come to an agreement, considering how important he is to the show.

People watch "Idol" to hear what Simon says, much like people in the 1970's watched "Monday Night Football" not so much for the game (unless their hometown team was playing), but to hear what Howard Cosell would say.

Besides, didn't Cowell (along with fellow judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson) participate in judging the first-round auditionees this year??

The only major change I could see in "Idol" might be scheduling, but I'm bringing it up in another thread.

My guess: Simon will be back for "American Idol 5" and for at least a couple of more seasons after that.
