O&A and Jim Philips

So, Opie and Andy are ticked at Jim Philips. Claim he stole their bit on being a distraction for TV news reporters. These bozos, who were FIRED for indencency, land on satellite radio by the grace of God...cuz no SANE PD on commercial radio would take them...and are now attacking Jim Philips for who knows what reason. Jim sez it's the oldest trick in the book...get a popular host to talk about your program...OK, might work, but not for sophisticated listeners. I have XM and wouldn't tune to O&A for all the money in the world. I worked in radio in several markets...Houston, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Tampa/St. Pete and Orlando. Couple of smaller markets too, but that doesn't matter here.

The O&A "Army" is out there and calling the Philips Phile. I listened from 3:30 - 6:00 today. Their "Army" was a bunch of idiots who couldn't last a minute with Philips. OK, so Jim had the "dump" button at his command...but he didn't use it as much as I would have...as a producer OR on-air host.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Well that is wrong...they were paid their full contract by Infinity and had a job offer from Citidel. They would have had a job within a week, literally almost across the street, from a direct competitor. Once released from their contract, Citadel was going to put them on but Infinity decided not to release them and pay them the remaining almost 2 years. Probably in hopes they would disappear from radio forever.

> and are now attacking Jim
> Philips for who knows what reason.

They were mostly ticked off by Jim's quote of having to pass this Newsbreakers bit through management so it would be his and no one could rip him off. He also claimed he got the idea from the Newsbreakers reading an article in the NY Times. O&A (and probably many other radio shows over the years) have used this live news shot promotion for a few years now (they have video of a lot of the promotions available to view). Outside of their Arthur Chien incident, their most famous national promo bit was a girl flashing the camera on the Today Show with O&A WOW stickers over her breasts.

O&A love that.

I hope you're sophisticated enough to see through Phillips fluff.

> The O&A "Army" is out there and calling the Philips Phile.
> I listened from 3:30 - 6:00 today. Their "Army" was a bunch

Phillips asked to bring it on and they did. He said he will take on all comers...too bad Phillips kept dumping out on the listeners even when they tried to have a decent debate with Phillips.

> Jim had the "dump" button at his command...but he didn't use
> it as much as I would have...as a producer OR on-air host.

Jim dumped out on callers multiple times. "Dugout Doug" mentioned Phillips dumping out on callers, Phillips quipped that he didn't but had no answer when Doug mentioned he had already been dumped out on 3 times. Phillps dumped out on callers as soon as they mentioned O&A.

> Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Phillips claimed he got this bit on his own, then through Newsbusters then admitted he ripped O&A. He claims he formed the idea via the NY Times article about Newsbusters and never heard of O&A. HUH? O&A were mentioned in the first sentence and 2nd paragraph of the article (which O&A read on air). How could you claim you knew nothing of O&A's show while reading an article talkign about Chien? Chien's stupid remarks came as he yelled at an O&A intern. That is a known issue. How could you avoid the whole issue when it gained international press?? And yes, it was international, I believe the Chinese newspaper that mentioned it was the Sout China Morning Post. How could you work in radio and not know of O&A and what happened in 2001? Also, for someone that claimed he knew NOTHING of O&A at the top of his bit suddenly came up with a lot of O&A history. Was he reading it off a sheet? I don't know, but the way he talked, it didn't sound like he was reading...he talked like he knew a LOT more than he claimed. That is my opinion.

Then they went off on Jimmy Norton...bad bad bad move. They trashed him about how he was on a failing Comedy Central show "Tough Crowd". Um Mr. Uninformed Phillips, Norton was a guest and nothing more. That failed show was actually a Colin Quinn show. Norton also had his second appearance on The Tonight Show and just finished taping an HBO comedy special. I won't mention he had shot two, not one, TWO Mtv pilots, was selected on "America's Top Comic" and made an appearance (albiet a one line appearance)in the international money maker "Spiderman". So to claim Jim is a faliure jsut makes you look stupid in doing absolutly NO research on the people comeing at you. OMG I haven't even tapped IMDB to see if I am missing anything. As Opie mentioned, how many national shows has Phillips appeared on or been featured on?

Phillips also claimed he was the number one non-music show on XM. The reason that came as a shock to all of his co-hosts is that it is total fabrication. According to the XM Director of Programming Eric Logan who was on O&A this morning, he is not number one on XM in any way, shape or form. From listener ratings on channel 152, Phillips ranks next to last only above Mr. Lawrence.

Yes I know, O&A is probably skewing information to their side. BUT the claims O&A made, they did back them up and even used Phillips' boss Eric Logan. Phillips countered the O&A listener attack with lies and dodging callers. I am a long time O&A listener and I can tell you Phillips is in for a LOT more of this in the days coming. Shannon Burke trashed O&A and resorted to calling their agent to ask O&A to stop.

Do they (O&A) really have nothing more to offer than talking about bad Orlando radio?

You O&A groupies are truly a sad lot.

Yes, they are a funny show. It depends how dark or off beat your humor is. They do admit they are heavily bitter against terrestrial radio and especially bitter against the media. Again, depending how dark your humor goes, you'll either love it or revile it. I look at it like Monty Python in that you either find it incredibly funny, or you think it's stupid. You either click with it, ir you don't.

They do go off on multiple topics, but when they dial in on something, they tend to carry on with it.

Obscure?!?!?!?!

You have got to be kidding me. Lets see, they were #1 in NY, Philly, Boston, Cleveland, Buffalo. They were the best syndicated show since Howard and yes they screwed up and lost that. I dont care if you hate them or the show, but to say that they are obscure is absolutly ridiculous!

If you're in the business, do me a favor, go to your PD or GM and bring him in the studio. Openly go on mike and blatently laugh in your host's face for creating the "theater of mind" that drives your fan base. Call the fans of the show, who follow your show in any way, shape or form, tell them openly on air how dumb, stupid, idiot lemmings they are for listening to anything the Djs have to say and that if they do anything but snap their fingers to the music, that they should be ashamed of themselves and crash their car into a tree. Tell them how pitiful they are and EVERYTHING the DJ does and says is nothing but theater of mind and fake.

If you're in the business, you as a show create the theater of mind, you create the show and youget fans hooked. You create the emotion and then you trash them for going on that fun atmosphere you create.

Next time you go to a concert and the singer asks peopel to clap their hands, openly laugh at the person next to you that obeys. Go to the book store and stand around laughing at the people buying the next book touted by Oprah.

Fans are fans are fans...if they feel strongly about what is going on, they will go with the flow. If you're not in the business, then get off your sophisitcated pedestal, please

OK, might work, but not for sophisticated
> listeners.

I hope you're not considering today's Phile show sophisticated. First he says to bring it on and he will take on all comers then places rules, you can only ask a question if you answer a question and a lot of these are not common kowledge questions. On top of that, he did nothing but use the dump button. Also he is claiming he is quitting and has quit as of 3:10pm est. He was let in that XM was planning on dumping the show, so he quits. Nice and sophisticated. Well at least he can SAY that he announced he would take on all O&A callers, too bad he spent pretty much the entire show announcing the rules, complaining about filing a lawsuit and playing commercials. Then he has to be "sophisticated" and make sexual innuendo on Anthony's name and goatee.

Don't say your'e going to take everyone on and then put up 100 walls making it impossible. The "O&A Army" as they call themselves are voracious and they WILL keep doing this daily.

Oh yes, Philips claims they threw in Chester to steal from him...Chester was the name of Anthony's ex-mother-in-law's dog. That has been a known fact since they were in Boston almost 10 years ago

Awesome show Jim Philips...dodge and weave, dodge and weave. Get ready for days and days of this...so far today's show was 3 hours of NOTHING

You are out of your mind.

> > Obscure?!?!?!?!

> They are now...

You are out of your mind. Will you say Stern is obscure for going to Sirius? Or Jim Breuer, or Bob Edwards (on XM)? Satellite is so obscure that every major pro sport has exclusive contracts.

I participated in the "assault on Jim Philips" and can tell you it's very fun to join in. The pure fustration he had was beautiful.

When he calls O&A and appoligizes for lying, then we'll let him go. If not, his show will get these calls continously. If he doesn't it will fade slowly out, much like his career will.

He's a one market zero, and may soon be off the XM platform in favor of other, more talented shows. Like Ron n Fez.

BTW - O&A are so right about female cohosts, the hole on with Philips adds nothing to the show.

You know, if Philips turned around and gave O&A credit about this from the get go, this issue wouldn't exist. Instead, he played like they didn't exist and the idea was his. They are both on XM so that is like taking away from your brother, giving to your mom and saying it was all you.

His show was a joke today. If he holds is promise to quit, it will be like this tomorrow too

I must now express my total frustration with Philips after hearing the garbage he threw out there today. You're absolutely right...he calls them out then won't let them get a word in edgewise. Seems like he's also been saying the caller's name right as he pops them off hold, and they can't HEAR him at the moment when the Gentner's engaging the call. So all the "morons" as he called them, that weren't ready to speak, probably didn't KNOW they were on.

I appreciate the show when he sinks his teeth into a subject (like politics, the arena thing from a few years back, etc.). I definitely don't appreciate stunts like what he's doing today.

Caught the last hour of Phillips today, was terrible, wish he had some balls and really got into it with some of the callers instead of dumping everyone.

Never heard O & A, could care less about their news reporter bit, XM blows anyway, the future is at SIRIUS.

If the future is at sirius then they better get started...not to mention that GIANT friggin receiver...I enjoyed 104.1 while I was in Florida, and before XM...And still find the midday guy amusing...But seriously, O & A is the best show on radio...I'm so glad I found them...Phillips should choose his battles more carefully, he lacks the wit or the team to battle on air with O & A...

Doesn't this paragraph describe Phil Hendrie's entire act?

Re: Jim Philips and lies...

I know, I know...I shouldn't be surprised. But this stupid little war with O & A has caught my attention. And for all you "get a life" people, I work in this stupid business...it IS my life. Forgive me if I'm interested in it!

Jim Philips is NOT the most-listened-to non-music program on XM. He's not even in the top 20. The Monsters and Dr. Freakin Laura beat him. Maybe that's what's REALLY under his skin. G. Gordon Liddy's #5...think Jim's getting that 3p-4p hour back any time soon? HA. He's getting his butt kicked on satellite radio. Mike Savage and Jerry Springer are beating him. He's barely above Car & Driver Radio and Ask The Handyman. See for yourself: http://www.xmvote.com/biglist.php

O & A beat him 655 to 12. Yes, yes...results are not scientific. Neither is Arbitron.

That being said...my radio is still going to be locked to 104.1 on my drive home every day. Well, unless he keeps up with the dumping callers every 2 seconds bit. That'll get old REAL quick.
