O&A support coming from an unusual place: Advertisers

This is nice to see! For once advertisers actually SUPPORTING a show that makes them money.

***************

Pro-Opie & Anthony support is coming from a very unusual place: their advertisers. Under what passes for normal circumstances, you'd see sponsors pull out of a show to distance themselves from something negative the hosts said or did. In this case, it's the opposite, as a couple of clients are actually dropping their advertising because XM suspended O&A.

In a letter posted on his company's Web site, Nashville Coffee GM, Lou Galli went off on XM: "It is apparent that XM Radio is beholden to crybaby special interest groups who cannot separate humor from reality," he wrote, saying he's not only pulled his own ads, but also contacted other O&A sponsors and encouraged them to do the same.

Galli added, "It is also unfortunate that XM Radio executives don't have the guts to stand up for their on-air talent."

OOOOOOOOOH NASHVILLE COFFEE?..Not exactly XEROX or PROCTOR AND GAMBLE! sounds like a tiny mom and pop shop advertiser as evidenced by his completely unprofessional, "pest"-like comment. Something tells me this will not break XM's bank.

The point is that this never happens in radio. How many time have you heard of any advertiser supporting talent in a situation like this? I can't think of any. This is newsworthy and it's free PR for an unknown coffee company.

Matters little. This incident and JV's dilemma have nothing to do with advertisers. Okay it has everything to do with advertisers but not how some here seem to think. Fact is these guys didn't make money. No money, no work. It is called commercial radio you know so it needs commercials. And all these talk guys have Howard Stern to blame for their failure. Howard was a ratings giant. None better. Big ratings, big advertisers. Howard left, the standard was set. But not many have the ability he had at generating income. That's not so bad, but once they've tasted big money that's what they expect. So if you can't make spread sheet look like the shirts 'think' they should look, you go. But today the big radio companies have lots of lawyers on the payroll so instead of simply firing on air talent, they find a reason to. Look at it this way though, it is actually a better way for O&A to go. What would you rather read the truth, "O&A fired due to lack of ratings and no big advertising dollars (other than some coffee company whose owner likes the show and Trojan who can't advertise much anywhere else)" or "O&A fired 30 days after suspension for rude comments". The second one sounds sexier. But when you are about to dump a format in the number one market you want to make sure the slate is clean enough so get rid of the dead weight.

And as for rape, as George Carlin says, rape CAN be funny - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3av_qRR_DWc

Mr. Graff, I disagree 100%

According to the TOS of this board, Nobody can get "personal"here, so I wont. I'll have have to drag George Carlin into this;

If George Carlin was a "human being" not a (moron and a) comedian, and you asked him if "RAPING HIS MOM OR HIS DAUGHTER OR HIS WIFE was funny, what do you think he'd say??

Mr. Graff, I disagree with George Carlin 100%.

I'm very angry at these posts that claim "rape is FUNNY." If you were to ask the family of a RAPE VICTIM (note the word VICTIM),as I have on a near daily basis for a number of years NOBODY EVER says it's funny. The people who say RAPE IS FUNNY never hear what I hear.

Rape affects people for the rest of their lives. Not only the vicitm but the victms family.

According to the TOS of this board, Nobody can get "personal" here, so I wont. (due to your last post) I'll have to drag George Carlin into this;

If you could talk to the REAL George Carlin who (probably is) a "human being" not a publicity seeking (moron and a) "comedian" (porr use of words) and you asked him if "RAPING HIS MOM OR HIS DAUGHTER OR HIS WIFE was funny, what do you think he'd say??

I'm not sure if Howard or O&A or the people who employ them can be classified as "human" so I won't comment there.

I'm most disappointed in this generation of radio people (I sold my radio stations in the mid-80's) and how this business has gone into the toilet.

I can't speak for Mr. Carlin but will ask him next time I see him and report back. Knowing the jist of what the bit was about he'll probably say "Tell the guy to lighten up, man!", but as I say, I'll ask him and report back since he said it, not me.

Weren't these advertisers on the XM side only? I know I heard adameve.com ads all the time, but I'm not sure about the Nashville Coffee deal. If they were a CBS advertiser and cancelled over XM, that would be quite silly.

I'm not sure it would fit into Xerox or P&G's ad strategy to advertise on uncensored entertainment channels. Then again, when has anyone ever heard a Xerox ad, period? Not me. The biggest company I've heard advertising so far on an XM channel has been Lexus, but I've never listened to the Clear Channel programmed music stations. Frankly, the best thing about O&A's suspension so far has been no more, "Tell them about the discount, Harry" ads that drive me [censored] insane.

Their channel's feed to DirecTV is much better, since the D* folks apparently didn't want XM advertising on their channels. It's all PSA-type adverts and info-tidbits. Much easier on the ears.

These moves won't break XM's bank, but it still sends a message that not only pests care, but advertisers sought them out for a reason.

Imagine the brouhaha if several major advertisers pulled out of WFAN after Imus' firing, and because of it.

Good points Zach but the biggest problem is one that you have touched on unintentionally .Opie and Anthony are NOT IMUS, they are NOT Stern and once they finally figure that out and act accordingly they might actually develop into a great show again one day. Meaning when they get over their egos and thinking they are as big or bigger than Stern (which NOBODY IS) they might actually get it together. This is why they're in the spot they're in today, they always think they are invulnerable.
