O.J. Simpson book, FOX TV special canceled

Good riddance.

However, it is telling of the level of ethics and integrity that exists at News Corp that they needed to see a public uproar erupt over this book and interview in order to realize that giving a forum to a probable murderer to describe (in the guise of "what if") the way he committed the crime is wrong.

The sad thing is that News Corp is probably not atypical of the large media conglomerates in this regard.

First of all, O.J. was acquitted by the American Justice System -- arguably the best in the world. Therefore, we must point out that he was ACQUITTED of ALL criminal charges.

Second, we must ask why FOX of all companies would publish something like this? RATINGS, pure and simple!!! FOX network (not to be confused with FOX news channel) is totally desperate for ratings. Even the much ballyhooed "THE O.C." is tanking in the ratings!!

My next question is, has this interview been done already? Or was it live. If it was done already, then I wonder where it's gonna show up on. Certainly it will land on a cable network or at least someone will get a copy and put it on YouTube or something similar.

What is the next step? Any guesses? As Michael Richards of Seinfeld fame found out when some tape his tirade with a cell phone, they are watching you :)

I was more than happy to hear that the book and the special were canceled. This guy is famous enough, in fact infamous for allegedly murdering Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. But who the heck else could have done it? Even though Cochran said, "If the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit." Was there any evidence pointing to anyone else?

BTW, I wonder what's going to happen to all the unsold copies of his book?

As reported through AP (see link below), HarperCollins says that any copies of the book would be recalled and destroyed... although, as the article's writer suggests, any copy that survives the recall would become an instant collectors' item.

No doubt copies of the book will be found on E-Bay, a few will have "fallen off the truck" on the way to the mulcher. What's funny about this is that NewsCorp responded less to public outrage and instantly to the projected loss of advertising revenue.

As one poster noted, Simpson has been acquitted of all charges. I don't know that gives him license to continue to squeeze whatever notoriety he can from the sorry affair, but he is certainly free to do so. Unfortunately, because of the civil suit, he may not benefit financially from the trial--which it appears he has done (Simpson has already received part of the pre-publication money).

Having said that, I ask:
1. Is this a free speech issue?
2. Should ACLU file suit?

It's absolutely not a free speech issue, other than companies exercising their free speech to not publish/air OJ's b.s. He has no Constitutional right to any specific outlet to let him talk. If he wants to self publish his "book," fine. He can stand on a public street corner and talk about it. But he has no inherent right to getting a book deal or TV special.

As sick as he is, OJ does have the right to what he did. But he wouldn't do it if there weren't enough of the general public sick enough to buy his book, to watch the show on TV, etc. Shame on News Corp for promoting this. Shame on the HarperCollins for publishing this garbage. Shame on the American public for giving News Corp and HarperCollins the idea that we would be even remotely interested in watching/reading it.

And OJ must be laughing all the way to the bank at all this - there is no such thing as bad publicity.

We have to remember that these were real people killed. It's not based on fiction. What if it was your mom, sister, or daughter cold bloodedly murdered? Who jokes around like that... "hmmm, if I killed someone, I would do it like..." That's about as bizarre as bizarre goes. I'm glad that people spoke out against it, and that the media picked up on this. But I don't know why any network would have even pondered doing this kind of show. In addition to the blatant disrespect shown for the deceased, this whole project was just thought of in bad taste.

You have to remember the first amendment protects political thought not commercial, that is why it's legal to zone for pornography and such.

OJ set it up so any profit from the book would've gone into a trust for his kids.

I would have much rather seen the special and book go ahead and have NO ONE BUY IT or watch it. That would send a strong message. The message would've been we don't care, go away.

Now the message is the squeeky wheel gets the grease.

I find the whole thing tacky, but so is a lot of TV. If OJ wants it he should self publish, he should set up a website. The really sad part is so many people are critical of OJ, but they would go out and buy the book or watch the special anyway.
