O.K. "PROVIDENCE" you're thoughts on WODS format flip

I posted this on my facebook.....

Ok radio people thoughts on WODS dropping its Classic Hit's format giving up The Bee Gees and Simon and Garfunkel for Kei$ha and Flo-Rida CHR.Sad to see a staple in BOSTON Radio for the past 25 years put to rest for Rhythmic CHR "AMP RADIO 103.3".Thoughts are I would think WROR would have thrown in the Towel a long time ago I like every other radio geek am surprised at CBS's move but can completely understand it. Yes more radio DJ's are out of a job but that is the sad state of radio.Computers killed the radio star and not Video.
Now in Providence,Tell me if you agree.Clear Channel should blow up WSNE's current format for a more Rhythmic CHR or simulcast WHJJ and put some local talent on.Thoughts from anyone.

kind of the same situation. with the PRO-FM/HOT combo, who would want to go against them??

Hot would be easy.Pro-Fm. A lot tougher. With Hot a strong Providence signal would squash them like a bug. I bet if 93.3 were to to flip to go against HOT 106. It would happen. Imaging and a tweaked playlist DONE RIGHT would work but CC would do it the cheapest way possible

As I said somewhere else online yesterday.... I like the flip. It has brought some energy back to the dial. At this point I think I just appreciate a change. Radio is so stale these days. At least this rejuvenates things which is kind of exciting.

103.3 WODS was my favorite music station to listen to but I also liked Star 93.7 a few years ago, and 103.3 Amp Radio is like a modern sounding Star. It plays a lot of dance and R&B music without much hip-hop and rock, and while it may not show much in the Providence ratings, it will definitely get listeners in RI, as 103.3 WODS always did with a signal that covers much of the state. B101 and 105.7 WROR sound stale with too many classic rock hits and repeats. 103.3 WODS had the great variety of something for everyone, pop, dance, soul, and disco.

As someone who had grown up and was living in SE MA at the time WODS went Oldies in 1987, like the rest of the FM Oldies stations across the country roughly a decade ago or so when they literally dumped their 50's and early 60's music library and focused more on the mid to late 70's, later the 80's, I had stopped listening and eventually bounced from internet radio to satellite radio (XM), then back to internet radio. So it was basically no big loss.

If they had kept their music library intact since day 1, my opinion would be different. Same applies when B101 had changed call letters and formats towards the end of 1989, going from easy listening to oldies. If they kept the original oldies format intact, it would have been a disappointing loss. But like the rest of them, it's not a huge loss.

Northwoods....
Lets be honest here....the 50's listener is retired and probably not buying many products other than staples (no not Staple gun staples...milk bread etc). Why would anyone waste a full power FM signal on 60-year old tunes? I also think the days of any kind of major 60's music play is just about done. SiruisXM's 50s on 5/60s on 6 is likely your only option moving forward.

I am 54 and frankly I would listen to a 70s/80s/90s station MUCH MORE than 50s/60s/70s...like 95%/5%. I have NO connection to the 50s and only a small connection to the 60s (I did get my first records in 1967). And I'm not exactly YOUNG.....I am leaving the desired Demographic in 4 months LOL...

Good move for WODS. Since day 1, WODS has had to adjust their format -- to the point of dropping a decade or two -- to remain relevant to their current audience. These format tweaks always piss off those listeners disfranchised by the adjustment. CHR OTOH, is constantly attracting a new, young audience. Listeners who become too old for CHR tune to an A/C station, or where ever they go. CHR doesn't worry about hanging on to old duffers. This has been proved consistently by WHTZ, WXKS, WPRO FM, KIIS, WKQI... Get the picture? I believe that CBS plays the role of "second" CHR in most of their markets. It is still a step in the right direction and they ARE pulling some good #s and cumes!

Granite, I'm six years younger than you are and have been listening to, and have been a fan of, the music of the 50's and early 60's, for the past thirty five years. So I don't exactly fit the profile of the typical listener. It looks like internet radio is where I'll be staying.

Will The New WODS be playing 24 hour christmas music like The Old WODS?
I think not. Coast 93.3 didn't go Christmas last year, so don't expect AMP 103.3 to go Xmas! You might hear it on their HD2 or online channel. But who's got an HD radio around here anyway?
