Oak Island NC Daytime Bandscan Highlights May 2016

Thanks for the bandscans, Cyberdad. I have relatives in SC and my nephew used to live in NC, but I've never DXed in either state. Great to learn what you were able to hear out there.

Thanks, Jim. On balance I think I was in a pretty good DX spot. My biggest "regret" was that I didn't get more time to DX, but I have to be careful with the word "regret" because we had a great time with all the family there (ten people in all). I also liked that the house near the beach where we stayed was absolutely free, compliments of a friend of our daughter's.

All that said, what I would have liked to done is explore the possibilities that the south-facing saltwater path might present from that location. Perhaps some other time. Our daughter's friend has made it clear that we'd be welcome back. They even let us keep our keys. (She and her husband are from North Carolina but live overseas. Letting their friends and fam and use the place serves the purpose of having house-sitters on a frequent basis. Part of the deal is doing a few housekeeping and maintenance tasks....cleaning, lawn mowing, etc.)

You're welcome, Cyberdad. Glad that you got to spend some time with family and that you now have a place to stay when you visit there.

Later today I'll be working on my own out-of-town DX report, which I hope to post this evening.

Where will your report be from Jim?
Never have been to North Carolina but yes, this was an interesting report to read. Haven't DXd as much as I'd like the past several weeks. Summer is coming and that isn't the best DX season here in the Midwest, although it seems the later at night you get, the better conditions are if you don't have a bunch of interference around.

Schmave, it will be from Anaheim, CA - my first attempt at out-of-state DXing.

The summer storms and static are awful for DXing. Yesterday there was constant noise on the band here with all the storms going on in Texas and elsewhere. This morning things were surprisingly clear, but that'll change later today with more storms coming.

One thing about DXing in Anaheim in the summer is that thunderstorms almost certainly won't be an issue. I used to go out there 2-3 times a year between a major trade show at the convention center and regular Orange county business appointments. Lots of local signals, but you're not all that close to most of them. So unless you're near a local noise source, some pretty decent DX is definitely possible.
