Obama TV is coming to a small screen near you, just in time for the presidential election. Barack Obama has used his considerable campaign coffers to buy a half hour prime time slot.

Barack Obama is about to be must-see TV.

The Democratic presidential nominee has purchased 30 minutes of primetime TV on CBS and NBC for a massive infomercial that will be broadcast six days before Election Day, sources familiar with the deal told the Daily News. A spokesman for the two networks declined comment.

The primetime special will air Oct. 29, a Wednesday, at 8 p.m. According to sources, the campaign is also in discussions with FOX and ABC. There are complications with finalizing the FOX deal, a source said, because the Obama show could conflict with Game Six of the World Series.

The Obama campaign confirmed the purchase of the primetime slot, but aides refused to provide any information about the cost or the content of the show.

The ad buy on the two networks would cost an estimated $2 million, industry insiders say

That is the stupidest waste of money I can think of. I mean Obama is so far ahead in Illinios why waste money here. Does he have that much money to waste? Even our local races put the Democrats so far out in front, (Illinois is strongly Democratic because we had a few years of scandals by former Republicans so it's not related to GW Bush really).

It's all about the naysayers, and Obama is reaching out to each and every one of them.

Besides -- don't both candidates usually get a half-hour of prime-time the day before the election?

What does any of it matter? It's just political one-upsmanship and repeating the same ideas over and over to make them seem true (especially the way they are running that ObamaChannel on DishNetwork).
The Machine will choose whoever The Machine wants to be president.

...ironically, Obama's taking a page out of Barry Goldwater's 1964 playbook. That autumn, NBC was running David Frost's current affairs satire series That Was The Week That Was on Tuesday nights at 9:30 ET; the show took shots at both Goldwater and Lyndon Johnson, but the ones at Barry seemed to have more bite to them (such as the statement that the Republican Convention was to be a production of "16th Century-Fox"). The Republicans decided to purchase half-hour blocks of time on NBC in September and October, all in the time slot usually filled by That Was The Week That Was. Of course, Goldwater lost by a landslide, but those block purchases managed to knock TW3 off the air; by the time of the election and TW3's return to the air, most of its audience had gotten used to switching over to Peyton Place on ABC or Petticoat Junction on CBS, and That Was The Week That Was was cancelled in May 1965...

What does it matter? He's already on a 24/7 Loop on Dish Network Channel 73.

Since Dish network is generally the third-place TV provider in any given area, a broadcast buy represents a significantly larger audience.

I wonder if the stations owned by Sinclair, Local TV, or Tribune will preempt for programming with a conserative bias? (Sinclair was famous for their 2004 "news" special against John Kerry, and Local TV over the WHNT/Huntsville preemption incident involving the former now jailed governor of Alabama. I bring in Tribune because both it and Local TV have ties to the former Clear Channel, which had deep Republican ties).

In 1992, Ross Perot bought time on a network (NBC?) to show his world-famous charts for a half hour. As far as I can recall, it is not very common for a presidential candidates to buy prime time network air time, but they only buy one network. I believe this is the first time a candidate has bought time on three (possibly all four) networks simultaniously.

And it sounds like Goldwater in 1964 bought the time on NBC to deliberately shut up David Frost...which seemed to have worked on that front, despite sorely loosing. Obama is just buying the time to get the word out...it would McCain that would want to shut up the media sans Fixed Noise.

FWIW--The McCain campaign will likely be offered similar media buys, if they want to make them.

What does it matter? He's already on a 24/7 Loop on Dish Network Channel 73.
Because...wait for it...not yet...almost there...now! Not everyone has Dish Network.

It matters to those of us who don't have DISH Network (Which is about 50% of the country).

By you saying what you did, that would be like me saying he's on DirecTV's The101 (Which of course every DirecTV subscriber knows is not true).

That said, it probably wouldn't surprise me if HDNet News also aired it and DirecTV picked up their coverage for broadcast on The101. Imagine the possibilities this would bring that news network as it just itches to get its foot in the door of respectability and credibility as it awaits the arrival of February 2009 when most (If not ALL) cable channels will be in HD.

Cheers :)

I say again - NOT EVERYBODY HAS DISH NETWORK

I realize this may be hard for you DISH Network subscribers to understand, but for those of who DO NOT subscribe to DISH Network (And therefore DO NOT see looping 24/7 infomercials from EITHER candidate), - YOU CONSIST OF MAYBE 50% OF AMERICA. The remaining 50% is a combination of DirecTV, cable & OTA viewers.

And 50% for DISH Network subscribers might be on the Liberal side too.

Cheers :)

50%? Dish would be jumping for joy with that. ;)

In most cases among major markets, cable is the top provider, DirecTV second and Dish third.

There is no way DISH network controls 50% of TV viewing in the United States. http://informitv.com/articles/2008/08/05/dishlosessubscribers/ says they have 13.8 million subscribers. If there are four people to a household, DISH reaches no more than 20% of people.
Which is why I said thaty 50% might be on the Liberal side of the spectrum (Obviously I was right there).

And yes MarcB, your comment was taken the wrong way, but not entirely by me. I was just simply pointing out he does not a similar arrangement with DirecTV (At least not yet - *knock on wood*). If he did, it'd be on The101 with Joan Lunden possibly interviewing him (She currently does a "good samaritan" show on The101 showcasing the charitable things DirecTV subscribers do to make our world a better place to live in).

Cheers :)

That's now what I understood you as saying (and I was apparently not alone) :)
Removing the superfluous bits from the sentence, "those of you who do not subscribe to DISH Network consist of maybe 50% of America" ...

But really, so he has a 24/7 channel on Dish Network, what does it matter?
He's not covering anything new on the Dish Network channel that he's not covering in other places, or having CNN and MSNBC straight-out pimp for him 24/7.
If you want Obama coverage, it's out there, victim/non-Dish-subscriber status notwithstanding.

That's what I meant by "What does it matter?"
Also, it's just politics, and The Machine will run if Obama has a channel and if Obama does not have a channel. :D
