Obit: Arthur Hill @ 84...was "Owen Marshall: Counselor at Law"

Mr. Hill died Sunday of Alzheimer's disease at an assisted-living facility in Pacific Palisades, according to his son, Douglas.

Mr. Hill's portrayal of Owen Marshall, a small-town attorney, ran on ABC from 1971 to 1974. The show, which featured such up-and-coming actors as Lee Majors and David Soul as Marshall's associates, was modeled after another popular ABC series, "Marcus Welby, M.D.," which featured Robert Young as a small-town doctor.

R.I.P. to another class act. I once read that
the reason "Marshall" was not as successful
as "Welby" was that the Canadian-born Hill
was not as familiar to U.S. audiences as
Robert Young, already an icon from "Father
Knows Best." But I used to watch "Marshall"
(it came on after "Longstreet," with another
class act, the late James Franciscus, in its
first year) and afterwards tried to catch
anything Hill did. He was very distinguished,
at least in the characters he played.

Well, as I say whenever an older veteran
passes on, we've lost another of the good ones.

Funny that you would mention about Marcus Welby, MD starring the late Robert Young. In the 1973-1974 season, there was a crossover storyline where Welby's partner in practice Dr. Stephen Kiley (played by James Brolin) was being sued by one of his patents who claimed that he was the father of her child. She apparently suffered from some organic mental disorder. Part one was on Tuesday night on Marcus Welby, MD and the conclusion was on Saturday on Owen Marshall: Couselor at Law. It was an excellent blend of two shows. Arthur Hill's character was defending Dr. Kiley and won.

Robert Young was a truly fine actor. He did suffer from mental depression all his life. In spite of that, he brought many hours of great entertainment to our homes on both radio and TV with both radio and TV versions of Father Knows Best and many years of Marcus Welby, MD. He was a class act.
