Obit: Charles Lane, character actor in hundreds of film, tv roles, dies at 102

Charles Lane, the prolific character actor whose bespectacled face and crotchety persona made him instantly recognizable to generations of movie-goers, has died, his son said Tuesday. He was 102.

Lane, whose career spanned more than 60 years, appeared in such film classics as "It's a Wonderful Life," "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" and "Twentieth Century."
He also had a recurring role as the scheming railroad man, Homer Bedloe, on the 1960s TV sitcom "Petticoat Junction"...

Wow, I had no idea that this fine gentleman was still with us for all these years! Truly a fine actor - he will be missed.

I love Petticoat Junction, and I could not believe that he was still alive. He looked old back then. No offense. But, he played such a good villain in his character portrayal of Homer Bedloe. A remarkable life for someone that smoked for 70 years. Hooterville was good to many characters for longevity in life. Eddie Albert lived to be 99. Frank Cady, who played Sam Drucker is still alive and is 91. June Lockhart, who played Dr. Janet Craig, after Bea Benderet (Kate) died, is 82. Sid Melton and Mary Grace Canfield, who played the Monroe Brothers (Ralph & Ralph) are 87 and 81 respectively and still alive.

I didn't realize he was still alive either until 2 years ago when the TV Land Awards had a tribute to him for his 100th birthday.

I saw that, too...He was wheelchair-bound, but otherwise OK. After everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to him, he responded by saying, "I'm still available!"
