Obit: Dave Wright

Technically not a radio subject (although he did get his start
on the campus radio station at Greensboro Senior High School-
now Grimsley-in the early '50s), but veteran WFMY newscaster/
weathercaster Dave Wright has passed away at age 76.

After a stint working in his family's clothing store, Wright decided
that he preferred words to clothes. He joined WFMY in 1957,
hosting the "Circle K Kiddies Club," playing Santa Claus on the "Old
Rebel Show" each year, and--most memorably--he was "The Atlantic
Weatherman," with his trademark sign-off: "Dave Wright, good night."
He's also remembered for his coverage of the Nazi-Klan shootout in
Greensboro in 1979.

My dad went to high school with him, and has told me that Wright had
broadcasting in his blood even then.

Wright had been in a nursing home in Winston-Salem for some time.

With Wright and sportscaster Charlie Harville gone, that basically leaves
only Lee Kinard from what I consider WFMY's golden age--the '50s through
the '70s.
