Obit: Dene Hallam, Former WHN, WKHK PD

One of the most important figures in New York country music radio, Dene Hallam, passed away in Atlanta over the weekend due to an undisclosed illness. He was in his 50's. While in New York, Hallam achieved the rare feat of programming one country station (WHN), then working at a rival station (WKHK) and proceeding to beat his old stomping grounds (thanks to RoddyFreeman for this info).

An outspoken programmer, Hallam spent many years in Atlanta at Kicks 101.5, and most recently at the time of his death, was the program director of Atlanta-based syndicated country disc jockey Moby's network.

There is far more coverage on this story on the R-I Atlanta board, as well as Allan Sniffen's New York radio board.

Speaking of which, I had been reading that prior to country radio, he had worked with the rock format, particularly the old WRNW (now The Peak). Did he ever work with Howard Stern?

we were actually friends at Suffolk Community College together , circa 1971/1972, he was great, but all business, while I was all pleasure; even then he was very focused on where he wanted to go,encouraging me to go in the same direction, which, in retrospect is quite flattering..
RIP,Dene..

Wow, Dene got around, didn't he? Of course, part of that had to do with what some would call a divisive approach... nonetheless, Dene got things done.

divisive? ...wow... well, we were friends in the early days, before he had anything to be divisive about...but the business lends itself to that sort of thing, one of many reasons that I opted out while he was opting in..
but at the time, he was egging me on to join the party, hardly divisive at all
(I opted for magazine writing, fronting a punk band in the downtown 70's Warhol/Max's Kansas City scene, all things that were totally alien to him)
