Veteren Radio and TV Guy Ed Penneybacker passed away 07/23/08 at age 80.

Pal...thanks for the board posting about the death of Ed Pennybacker. Growing up in Albuquerque during the 60's and early 70's who could forget KQEO's Mobile News sounder...and those infamous words..."This is Ed Pennybacker in BIG RED...reporting from..." Ed was the source for breaking news for many years. He almost daily covered the happenings at APD and the Bernalillo County Courthouse. We knew we had made the big time when Ed in BIG RED showed up at Sandia High School in early 1967 to cover our student walkout following our state basketball win over Valley High School at the "Pit"

Joe Monahan has a wonderful tribute to Ed on his Friday (7/25.08) blog;

Ed Pennybacker was a hard-driving, hyper-competitive radio newsman who cruised the streets of Albuquerque in the 60's and 70's in his signature car "Big Red." Later, he would go into TV and become a well-known consumer reporter for KOAT, but his reputation was first earned chasing ambulances and covering breaking crime news from that colorful station wagon. Pennybacker, 80, died in ABQ Wednesday. [EDIT]

AZJERRY.........I forgot to mention on my earleir reply to you,since you mentioned the Sandia win over valley in 67' that was the same tourney, that the biggest underdog in tourney history (Manzano was something like 14-16) upset the bigeset favorite (Hobbs was like 25-0 and averaging over 100 pts/game) in tourney history led by Rick Day, and Bobby Clayton, sadly they (MHS) lost to Valley in the semis, who in turn, lost to Sandia 74-70 in the finals. During that era Hobbs a winning streak of like 5 out 8 Titles. It's not my opion about the "greatest upset" it is stated in the State tournament program every year. I had to qualify that because I am from the manzano class of 1964, go Monarchs !!!!! And also my First cousin George Maes from Santa Cruz High School (Closed in the 90's) has held the single scoring record since 1964, 81 points in one game, on 11/24/64, that game vs coronado high was broadcast on AM KDCE Radio Espanola ,NM

Pal Al...thanks for the sports history lesson...that's awesome! I didn't remember the Monarch-Eagle upset
that same year. Congrats on being a Monarch. I have a an old friend (actually from grade school) who graduated from Manzano in '67. You probably know this, who did the play-by-play on KDCE of the
Santa Cruz-Coronado game envolving your cousin?
:)

AZJerry..............I don't recall who did the play by play for that game. I was the DJ for tha Sandia class of 1966 reunion in 2006, and I was supposed to do class of 1967, but was in conflict with another fucntion I was DJing at., just missed you. If you were class of 1967, you graduated with my sister in law, Linda Stackpole. My father in law was Jim Stackpole basketball coach at Jackson Jr High, and refereed some that 1967 tournament.
Small world, eh.
