Obit: Frances Reid (1914-2010) Daytime legend

Various sources are continuing to report that Frances Reid, best known as Alice Horton on Days of our Lives since the show's debut in  1965 has died at the age of 95. Reid previously starred in Portia Faces Life, As the World Turns, and the Edge of Night. She last appeared appeared on Days of our Lives for Christmas 2007. Since then she developed severe dementia and moved into a nursing home, but was still credited as a cast member.

RIP Frances.

:'( :'( :'(

Likely Frances' last public appearance, when she and other daytime icons (all who, strangely enough, had not won a Daytime Emmy up till then) received the 2004 Lifetime Achievement Award from NATAS:

The Horton home --and Christmas tree-- won't be the same without her...

It ranks with the passing of Charita Bauer (Bert Bauer, Guiding Light)
some 25 years ago as one of the true tragedies of daytime. While I haven't
been a Days fan in years, I always enjoyed its Christmas shows (as I did GL's)
in the days when she and Macdonald Carey were the support figures on the show,
and I agree that Christmas in the Horton household won't be the same.

Here's hoping Helen Wagner (Nancy Hughes, ATWT) outlives that show's cancellation.

...relating to cinema rather than television, but one of Ms. Reid's finest performances was as Emily, Arthur Hamilton's wife in the 1966 John Frankenheimer piece Seconds. SEMI-SPOILER ALERT!!!

She only appears in the picture with two actors, John Randolph and Rock Hudson, both playing her husband under separate identities. But her interactions with both, and especially with Hudson (who finally proved how damned good an actor he really was in this picture), were note-perfect...

From the 1994 special 50 Years of Soaps:

In this montage, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joBRTuuxRRs
the Hortons appear first, in their first scene together on Days' debut ep from 1965 (shown in b&w but it and all eps actually aired in color)....and last, in a touching sing-along scene from 1980, to 'Tom' and 'Alice's favorite song, "Always".

Airing just after the montage, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBhy3j5CyU4&NR=1
shows the appearance on stage of Frances Reid and previously-mentioned legend Helen Wagner, to a deserved standing ovation. Each talks about their TV family and that each lost their leading men in recent years.
