Obit: George Michael, WABC DJ, 1970's

It is being reported that he passed away early this morning after a two-year battle with cancer.

Michael also hosted the "George Michael Sports Machine" which aired locally on WNBC-TV and syndicated through NBC.

George Michael was 70. RIP King George.

There is a group on Facebook called "R.I.P. George Michael":

There is a report on this at WRC-TV's website. Aside from hosting the Sports Machine, George Michael was also the sports anchor at NBC 4 DC

This is a shocker to me who on some Sunday nights would watch The Sports Machine on NBC4 NY.

I didn't even know he had cancer.

So long King George, I hope one DJ out there plays a song by CHICAGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO as George would say.

:( sad to hear this this morning when I looked at the board. I never got to meet him but probably someday would have. I remember in the 70's on wabc and He was just on wabc not long ago. He had a great voice. He seemed friendly too, I wish I could have had the pleasure to meet him. I have met many other air personalities in my days. I send my love and support out to his family, friends and Fans!! RIP George!! Thanks for the Memories!!

George for a period in the mid-1980s did sports commentary on WRQX (Q107) for the morning show. He will surely be missed!

Hate to hear this news, George was one of the greatest. He would always say 'From". From WABC, From WFIL. Loved his high energy production, it was show business. And when he debuted that night on WABC, I never had more anticipation for a new jock starting at a radio station. I knew George somewhat from Famous 56, but it was so exciting to hear him on WABC. George you WERE evening radio to us kids growing up in the 70's.

When he on Q107, he never did that.

That definitely carried over when he was a TV sportscaster on Channel 4 here in the DC area. He was very well liked and respected!

I was a in my 20s when he took over for Cousin Brucie; great show, great talent...

And Howard Hoffman, who was ultimately George's replacement on WABC, also had some kind words about him to share on his Facebook page yesterday.

During his years with Musicradio 77, Mr. Michael frequently did sports reports on the weekend editions of WABC-TV's Eyewitness News - but a hint of the path his career would later take.

He also did New York Islander Hockey and he turned down an offer to replace Lindsay Nelson as Mets Play by Play

I fondly remember George Michael talking up "Because The Night" by the Patti Smith Group on 77WABC:
"now here's the girl that you'd never take to a fancy French restaurant"..!!!!..lol..
and Howard Hoffman?
he wound up having to play "Death To Disco" by Jimi LaLumia(yes) and The Psychotic Frogs on a Top 9 at 9, when we commandeered the phone request lines in record stores throughout NY and got coverage in Newsday ,The Daily News and Billboard(rubbing shoulders with FunkyTown,Call Me,and Another Brick In the Wall);
the only true 'punk' record to ever get played in prime time on WABC(edited to death,and removed from the playlist the following day);
give my regards to Howard!!
