OBIT: Jack Twyman

Jack Twyman, who played college basketball for the University of Cincinanti and eleven seasons for the Royals of the NBA passed away on Wednesday (May 30) in a Cincinnati-area hospice of reported blood cancer. Beyond Twyman's athletic skills is his humanitarian work with teammate Maurice Stokes. Following an injury in 1958, Stokes became paralyzed and confined to a Cincinnati hospital. Twyman became his legal guardian and help raise funds for his care. Stokes died in 1970. Twyman was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1970.

Twyman is listed here for his work as a color commentator on the ABC-TV Network coverage of NBA basketball in the 1960's and 70's.

Didn't he write a book about Maurice Stokes? I recall reading a book many years ago about him
and Twyman was either the author or he played a very prominent role in it.

Maurice Stokes was a Pittsburgh area native and still enjoys a following around here.

The Maurice Stokes - Jack Twyman story is right up there with "Brian's Song" as a touching story. There was a movie made about this, but I don't remember the title or who portrayed them. Nevertheless, it's worth watching, and I hope someone fills me in on the movie's info.

Twyman also was an excellent analyst on NBA games in the 60s and 70s.
