Obit: James MacArthur

James MacArthur, "Danno" on the original "Hawaii Five-O,"
died yesterday at age 72. I wonder how many people know
that Helen Hayes was his mother (she appeared in one 1975
"Five-O" episode as his aunt). With the new "Five-O" and all
the discussion about it on the National TV board, it seems ironic
that a cast member from the original show would pass on at
this time.

I was thinking that it was ironic as well. I did not know that Helen Hayes was his mother. He wasn't too active, relatively speaking, after that show, was he?

James MacArthur was the adopted son of Helen Hayes and play write Charles MacArthur. Their only "natural" child - a daughter, died of polio. James was, also, the nephew of John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur of PBS funding fame and former owners of WEAT-TV (now WPEC), and the AM & FM, West Palm Beach.

I didn't know about the connection to John D. MacArthur.
He owned the Colonnades Beach Hotel in Palm Beach Shores,
FL, and allowed the late-'60s game show "Treasure Isle" to
originate there (he may have even had some money invested
in it) in an unsuccessful attempt to attract paying guests.

I hadn't heard anything about James MacArthur since the
original "Five-O" left the air in 1980 until today.

He used to appear rather regularly on the radio in Boston (WRKO/Howie Carr Show). Seemed like a very affable and charming guy and he provided a lot of interesting tidbits about the original Five-O.

RIP James.
