(From the "Boston Globe")
John Bromfield, the handsome actor best known as a contemporary Western lawman in the 1950s television series ''The Sheriff of Cochise" and ''US Marshal," died Sunday. He was 83.
Mr. Bromfield died of kidney failure in Palm Desert, Calif., where he had gone to seek medical treatment, said longtime friend Laurie Savage. The actor's home was in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.
On camera a dozen years, the actor hit his peak portraying lawman Frank Morgan from 1956 to 1960. For the first two years, Morgan was the sheriff of Cochise County, Ariz.; then the character was promoted to US marshal, with the series title echoing his new rank.
Instigated by Desilu Studios' chief Desi Arnaz, the change permitted more varied plots by enabling Mr. Bromfield's character to range all over Arizona and deal with different types of crime.
