Obit: John Dayl

Just heard, old John Dayl died over the weekend. Evidently he did a Saturday night show.

I made fun of John's phlem filled shows, but damn he was good. He could take an amusing story and spin it into a grand tale. Whenever a Holier than Thou Christian would call to spout bible quotes, John would not only spout them back, but he would correct the caller.

I never got to hear him much on 1100, but its a sad day in valley talk radio. John was a unique talent and one of the last of the "old school" guys left here.

John Dayl was one of the great characters in the history of KFYI. He made us laugh alot...his introductions to me in the traffic plane were priceless...we'll miss you John

I suppose the Good Lord was finally willing.

I recall when John first started at KFYI, he was a cantankerous, rigid and fiery guy, however he actually did possess knowledge--even if you disagreed with him ardently, you had to appreciate his passion. He was not the type of host to ignore callers either, he would get into many lengthy discussions and let the callers have more than enough rope for which to hang themselves--or possibly make Ol' John look bad, either way it was good radio. Although I consider myself a well above average Phoenix radio historian from the last 25 years--I honestly could not tell you the number of times KFYI fired and rehired John Dayl--it was at least three. Every time he came back he was even more fired up than ever... although his last run on KFYI was fairly short lived .

The final few years on KFNX were rather sad, John was bounced around that lineup and then when they decided to can everyone else and go with brokered talk, he was given a small role to play at night (on weekends)--sadly unless you lived in the studio or 2 blocks from the transmitter you wouldn't know it.

I believe it was a few months ago that I heard him last, while John slowed down substantially in his final few years, he still had a passion for radio, he will be missed. As was stated above, he was one of the old school KFYI crew that brought a unique sound to the airwaves.

John Dayl knew how to tell great stories. Sure he was rough around the edges and sounded older than time, but Dayl was addictive and he appreciated his audience's loyalty. Nurse Jeff and I remember years ago when he was headed out on vacation in his Lincoln, John would offer to bring peaches back from somewhere in Utah. The way he described these peaches, you'd want to call him and ask he bring back a flat in the trunk of his car. We never made the call as peaches in the trunk of a Lincoln driving through Arizona in the summer didn't sound appealing. But we never forgot his generosity or great stories. A tip of the fez to ya, John!

I loved when he had the time and inclination to let a caller make a complete ass of themselves. He would let the caller speak as much as they wanted, then he would move in for the kill and completely obliterate the caller's point. It took lots of knowledge and a patient demeanor to get there, but when it worked, damn, it was good radio.

"If the creek don't rise and the Russians don't drop the big one...."

John could be cantankerous on the air, but he was a pussycat in person. Just a sweet guy with a lot of opinions, but he never acted like his opinion was the only one that mattered. I recall the day he got let go (the first time) he philosophically, and with a smile, said to someone in the hall that "we're all just written down in pencil" and left it at that. You couldn't dislike the man.

The creek has risen…

…RIP John…

A classy host, even if much of what he said on air could be debunked with a simple internet search… …but he was always gracious and respectful of callers, including yours truly…

John Dayl sure knew how to stir things up, like his infamous Oklahoma bombing statement, and complaining about the other staff (John had to start smoking outside because of Heywood's allergies!). He had great guests too, always interesting. I always wondered about the stories he didn't tell, I know he had some famous friends. J. D. did a nice tribute to him.

John was a pleasure to work with and one of the most generous guys you'll meet. And, yes, Doc, those Idaho peaches and apricots were the best.

John and I would have some good arguments around the proverbial pickle barrel back in the early KFYI days. He was not so much an informed pundit heavily armed with research, as he was a showman with a little bit of flem and a lot of bulls_t.
He was certainly the last of a bygone era.

Phoenix New Times printed some of his horribly politically incorrect musings in a piece called "The Utterances of John Dayl".

No one could get away with those comments now, especially the extremely homophobic rant on Neil Guilano and the racist remarks about blacks and Native Americans.

Unbelievable and so incredibly politically incorrect as to be hilareous!!!

Phoenix radio is less one great character today.

[ J. D. did a nice tribute to him.

Barry Young also had a nice few minutes about John Dayl in the last few minutes of his show today. John was a good talk show host and will be missed.

I use to run John's boards for him at 1100 when I first started in radio i have to say he was a hell of a guy he use to bring in food from his sponsors for me. He was an old school guy would even smoke in the studio. RIP John you are one of a kind

LOL! In classic Dayl style, I'll never for get a spout from Dayl with Grant Woods and Mohan in the early KFYI smackdowns when they were talking about prostitution. Dayl says; " Whats wrong with guy wantin' to get his knob polished." Classic! Woods and Mohan were just rolling.

Also, Dayl coming on after Mike Newcomb was great entertainment and certainly got John fired up.

:'(

oops, forget.

I worked with John for a while at KFYI. I didn't know him well, but he was always a character with great stories. A couple of years later, after I'd gone back into music radio, I was playing poker at Gila River Casino. I look up, and the change guys is........Dayl! I thought, what the f@#$%??? Then I realized, it was just John gathering new material for more stories.

The great characters you meet in this business. It's what I love about radio.

John was one of the good guys and was one that always thought of others. His "say what is on my mind" demeanor was what I liked best about him. A few people called to let me know that he passed and said to check out this board. It is great to see so many say such good things about John Dayl.

It was put in my lap twice to fire John at KFYI and once to call him back to hire him. I remember Fred...say welllllllll Mike we have to stop all the calls to the switch board that want him back on, so call John and get him back, I think the time served off the air has equaled the statements he made.

At KFNX it was a pleasure to call John Dayl up and get him back on the air BEFORE....the budget for on air talent turned into "HOW MUCH WILL THEY PAY US TO DO A SHOW".

John was a great guy that lived on the edge and on trade. He would always say "got any car wash cupons, any resturant scrip."

He was one of the keys that unlocked talk radio in the valley and helped to build KFYI 910 AM.

Didn't know him personally, only listened to his show occasionally, and while it's sad to hear a unique voice silenced, it is nice to see so many good things written about him.

Kinda sad how it took KFNX the better part of a week to mention his death on their website...and is that all there is? Come on!

I tuned in late tonight (Sat) and they were doing another tribute: Herb Kalish and Joyce Downey were the hosts. John's 91 year old sister called in, as did his son, and his former wife, and others. They will do another show Sunday night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Very touching, and a great tribute. Clips from John's shows are included. Highly recommended.
