Obit: John Stewart, former Kingston Trio member, at 68

Singer-songwriter John Stewart, who wrote the Monkees hit "Daydream Believer," and who became a well-known figure in the 1960s folk music revival as a member of The Kingston Trio, has died.

Stewart spent six years leading the group, during which time the band recorded 13 albums, according to its Web site. After the trio disbanded in 1967, Stewart went on to an acclaimed solo career that saw him record more than 40 albums.

John Stewart had a #5 hit back in 1979 - Gold. It had Stevie Nicks doing backup vocals. I used to have a Warner Bros. demo album that I "liberated" from a radio station. I believe it was called Middle of the Road. It was a various artist album. On it was a cut by Stewart based on the recollections of his Father's sighting of Halley's Comet when he was a small child. It actually had his father on it. It was very haunting. Wish I had it now.
