Obit: Mike Evans @ 57...Was "Lionel" on "The Jeffersons"

Mike Evans, 57, an actor best known for his role as Lionel Jefferson in the TV sitcoms "All in the Family" and "The Jeffersons," died of throat cancer Dec. 14 at his mother's home in Twentynine Palms, his niece Dr. Chrystal Evans said.

He graduated from Los Angeles High School and studied acting at Los Angeles City College before landing the role of Lionel Jefferson in Norman Lear's iconic 1970s situation comedy "All in the Family."

Evans kept the role of Lionel when "The Jeffersons" was launched in 1975 as a spinoff featuring bigoted Archie Bunker's black neighbors in Queens who "move on up to the East Side" of Manhattan and an upscale life.

He was funny on both All In The Family and The Jeffersons. I liked it when he sparred with Archie on All In The Family. He also created the show Good Times as well. I wonder why he left The Jeffersons after the 1st season and replaced him with Damon Evans(who was no relation to Mike) only to come back in season 6.

Rest In Peace, Mike!

"Mr. Bunker would never burn a cross on your lawn, Mr. Davis...but if he saw one burning, he'd run and get some marshmallows." ;D
Sad news about Mike Evans. I was just wondering what became of him while watching a 'Jeffersons' rerun a few weeks ago. He'll be missed!

Oh man, what a shame. I really enjoyed his work on All in the family. He was the perfect foil for Archie. I liked the episode where Mike was going out running with Lionel in the early morning hours. Archie asked Lionel why Mike had to always go along with him. Lionel replied, well Mr. Bunker what would you think if you saw a young black man running alone thru this neighborhood in the dark. Ditto der Lionel.
I never liked the Jeffersons that much. I think it was because they diminished Lionel's role so much. No wonder Mike Evans left. Too bad they didn't have more Lionel and less George.
