Obit: Popular Ventura Radio Host Dave Ciniero Dies @ 58

(From the L.A. Times:)

Dave Ciniero, a beloved voice on Ventura County radio for three decades, was found dead in his hotel room Friday morning. He was 58.

Ciniero died in his sleep of heart failure, a spokesman for the medical examiner's office said.

Ciniero and his on-air partner, Bob Adams, were the hosts of a popular morning drive-time show on KVTA-AM (1520) for 21 years.

Adams, 68, retired from "The Dave & Bob Show" just six weeks ago, and Ciniero then was paired with radio personality Tom Spence.

Re: Dave Ciniero also did time at KNJO in Thousand Oaks

Dave Ciniero did a stint at KNJO in Thousand Oaks as PD back when Alan Fisher owned it. You could find Dave and Willa Sandmeyer (now with Ch5) doing live remotes under the escalator on the west end of the Oaks Mall every weekend. Dave was a down to earth guy who gave much of his time helping local youth. Tom Spence also did time with Dave at KNJO along with Mike Tanner and afew other radio greats. I still listened to Dave and the Gang from my home in Tehachapi till the end.

Dave will be greatly missed
Mike

Dave Ciniero also taught some communications classes at Cal Lutheran

In 1982 I had the pleasure of being a student of his. One moment I remember was when we were at the KNJO studios and he showed us the "Rapid-Q" cart machine which, unlike the ones we used at KRCL, had a fast-forward. Still, he didn't seem too fond of the Rapid-Q; according to him, the fast-forward was about the only thing it had going for it.

Another time, he played a tape in class of some commercials he had helped make for local businesses; one was a duet of him and someone else singing "Take my hand.....and I'll lead you to Carpet Tyme" (sung to the tune of "Stranger In Paradise.")

The thing that really stuck with me was when Dave was talking about writing copy for stories on crimes; he wrote the word "ALLEGEDLY" on the blackboard in all caps and stated that "that word is your best friend."

Thanks to Dave, I was able to spend a couple of Saturday mornings at the KNJO studio writing a few news bits (after asking the local law enforcement "anything going on overnight?") and one morning I even got to turn on the stereo in my dorm room and listen to my news copy being read by Harvey Kern -- who mentioned my name on the air (my real name, not this one.) My roommate got a kick out of that.

Looking back, I realize how fortunate I was that year to have both Dave Ciniero and Alan Fischler as instructors. I miss them both.

Dave Ciniero in 1982. Places I should have worked at!

In the summer of 1982 right after I quit the Phone Company, Dave along with KNJO's Sales Manager Frank Lamont (Monty) Von Eschon offered me the Afternoon shift, 1 to 6 PM, 6 days a Week, 48 Hours at $600 a month. I thought it was a terrible offer, and I declined. I also declined a position up in Klamath Falls that Jay Stevens/Steve Jay wanted me to take for $500 a month (1977), and worked 3 days at KLOM Lompoc in 1977 at the rate of $500 a month. Sure wish I would have taken Jay's offer up in Oregon though...
