Obit: Scott McKenzie (73) "San Francisco" (1967) Anthem

John Phillips named his daughter Mackenzie after Scott. One station I worked at had the album by the Journeymen, the folk group Scott and John started with Dick Weissman. They were trying hard to be the next Kingston Trio, even recording on their label, Capitol. Too bad Scott missed out on being in the original Mamas & Papas lineup.

ONE of my favorite songs for years was Scott's "Like An Old Time Movie", which may have been his follow up to "If You're Going". "What's The Difference" was another fine song.

I agree. Like An Old Time Movie was a great tune. I remember when it came out in the Fall of '67. Didn't get much airplay in Cincinnati but I loved it. I listen to it every couple of days on my IPOD and have his album. Several great cuts on it. Reason To Believe and No No No No were also great tunes of his.

Believe McKenzie participated in the Beach Boys classic, Kokomo.

He co-wrote Kokokmo but performed with the Mama's & Papa's in his later years.

The way I remember it was he had "San Francisco" and then no airplay until "Old Time Movie" was around for a week or three and that was it.

Of course that could be more a reflection of the market in which I was growing up at the time.

I remember my delight, during my very short stint at GBR in '80, at finding "Movie" in the library and playing it.

They also had "Blue Surf".

When I think of all the radio station libraries that have no doubt been raped and pillaged over the years...
