Obit: Singer/actor John O'Banion @ 59...had program on WIOU

Singer/actor John O'Banion died Feb. 14 in Los Angeles after battling for several years with frontotemporal dementia. He was 59.
O'Banion's pop song "Love Like You I Never Found" made the Billboard top 25 songs in 1981... Born in Kokomo, Ind., O'Banion began performing at the age of 13, first in the theater, and later in local Indiana band Hog Honda and the Chain Guards. By age 15, John was singing, doing impressions and hosting his own radio show on WIOU radio. In Indianapolis, he appeared in commercials, night clubs and summer stock. He hosted "The John O'Banion Show" on television before he was 20 years old.

He sounded like a pretty talented guy. Sorry to read about that.

Sadly, no one currently here at the Radio Ranch knew the guy. I think Rob Rupe came aboard in '84, and Greg Bell came aboard at around '85, which would have been shortly after he left. If anyone has any memories about O'Banion, please share. I'm pretty curious.

When I read about a guy like O'Banion, and couple that with some of the notables who have worked at this facility in years' past, I appreciate the historic impact small-town stations such as this ultimately have.
