WMCA was a great radio station back in the 60s. It was even more than WABC, the quintessential New York top 40 station of its day.

RIP Steve! You gave us memories we'll never forget! :)

Speaking of New York radio in the 60's... Anyone else sampling the recreation of the WOR-FM Top 300 on rewoundradio.com? What are your thoughts? It's getting phenomenal feedback on the NYRMB.

Listening to it right now! It sounds great! It's the WOR-FM Top 300 from May 30, 1969. This would've been a better soundtrack for my Class of 1970 HS reunion last summer than the DJ we had!

The Drake-formatted WOR-FM was the station that pulled me away from WMCA and WABC. WOR-FM sounded better because it was on FM and played "MORE MUSIC" as the Drake jingles always reminded listeners. Also, WOR-FM played lots of 1955-63 oldies and mixed them beautifully into then current hits.

IMHO, it was WOR-FM that fragmented WMCA's audience enough to necessitate the flip to talk in 1970. :)
