Obit: Sylvia Robinson, 76; "Pillow Talk", Mickey & Sylvia

Sylvia Robinson was an astute artist who was very successful in changing her style of singing with the times. From the early R&b sounds of Mickey and Sylvia to the sophisticated "Pillow Talk". And as a producer and record label owner recognized the value of a new style emerging from R&B/Hip Hop and recorded the seminal Rap Song .."Rappers Delight"...James Brown may have invented "Rap" as he claimed for years, but, Sylvia Robinson brought it to the mainstream. She needs to go straight into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame....

She was a terrific talent in all aspects of the business.

People from that whole generation who were in show business were among the most inspired and original people to live among us, coming up during a time when America was coming out of the Great Depression and heading in to the Great War, and inspired by the simplest and most basic of their surroundings as well as making their own glamour and style that once represented Hollywood.

It is interesting to note that "Rapper's Delight" was inspired by some kids on the street doing their own little thing. Though I am no mind reader I have no doubt that it probably reminded Ms. Robinson of a simpler time when doo woppers hung on the street corner. It was what kids did in the 50's and early 60's when she would have been in her 20s and 30s.

There are not many people in their 20s and 30s today who have that magic in themselves. Rest In Peace, accomplished soul.

exactly, every generation has their thing,,rapping was no different from street corner singing...a nutural progression..as the times changed and the social/political make-up changed, and the kids realized thay could express themselves with less barriers music as we knew it changed.

Amen to all the above, very interesting comments.
