Obit: Whitney Houston, 48, found dead in the Beverly Hilton Hotel

"All we are saying is give peace a chance." Whitney has found her peace at last! Every day is a gift, enjoy the day's well my friends! We will miss you lovingly Whitney! RIP....Heavens Lights Are Much Brighter Tonight!

Not much, from what I can see (even though even ESPN ran
a crawl during the Kentucky-Vanderbilt game last night). She
is remembered for one appearance: her rendition of the National
Anthem at the Super Bowl in (I believe) 1991.

What's this have to do with Classic TV?

Nothing except you'll have to be watching channels like ME-TV or Antenna to escape the media blitz on all the other channels for the next six months. Every intimate detail of her life over & over again. She's dead, I'm sorry. She was a great talent. That's all I need to know.

In other words, we have the Michael Jackson inundation all over again from two and a half years ago, albeit on a smaller scale. The attention that Houston is getting right now is more an indication of the times we live in rather than an honest expression of grief. Back when I was coming up, about the only celebrity death that merited the top headline story on newscasts was that of Elvis in 1977. I don't remember any other approaching that until the Chicken Noodle Network hatched our present 24/7 news cycle. That's the sad part about all this, and we can all forget about any improvements on that front. That's why we love the way things were--TV was a lot more proportional to reality in the pre-cable era.

I don't think that we will see anything even remotely approaching what we had with Michael Jackson. At least so far, this time we don't have any doctor in the background potentially looking at manslaughter charges in connection with her death. I just don't think that very many of us are going to sit through months and months of coverage like that all over again. Furthermore, this is an election year, so as soon as the next primary takes place, news attention will be re-directed there.
