Obligatory TALKERS Heavy Hundred thread

One of their biggest problems is a lack of on-air presence behind the mic. THAT is something that only comes with experience.

Maybe...but it's also something you can be born with. Chris Matthews had no on-air experience, and is still often clumsy on the air. But he has a very strong on air presence, which by some is seen as negative and abrasive. But he's anything but dull.

There is always the exception. But for every Matthews (who is excellent), there are tons of Jerry Brown's and Fred Thompson's.

Does he sound like a "trained professional" radio host? Nope, but he's got a very large audience. Maybe content (i.e. what he has to say and/or what he says and talks about on the air) is more important than being a slick "professional" radio host.

Helps that he's friends with Sean and Rush.

Like I said, he's a legal genius and I like what he has to say, but he sounds like crap.

It's not about "silky smooth voices". There are plenty of hosts with bad voices. But they know how to pull a show together and keep things on track.

I will say Levin is serious about learning the craft. He's much better now than he used to be. But he basically started in Market #1 and almost immediately got syndicated based solely on his off-air accomplishments and friendship with Hannity.

Bingo! My thoughts exactly. I've never understood how Levin amassed any audience at all. Who wants to hear an angry, whiny guy complain for three hours straight? I just don't get it.

Actually Levin WAS entertaining when he did a local Sunday show on WABC -- rough around the edges but thought provoking. That was before he adopted the "us vs. them" formula from Sean and Rush. Apparently he's a money-making genius as well.

I thought O'Reilly's show was decent. He was up against Rush, but still lasted for 10 years. I wish Lou Dobbs would've kept his show.

Both Levin and Savage always sound like they are angry. Day after day, the same old same old. I do remember Mark Levin's local show on WABC. I enjoyed him then. Nice having Curtis and Kuby back on WABC as an alternative to Rush. Afternoons in New York are Savage and Hannity. Sure would love to hear some local radio from 3 to 5PM. At least from 10 to Noon it is local in NY with Mark Simone and Geraldo, and soon John Gambling..at least for the last hour.

Just wanted to say......I've read all of Levin's books, except the one about his dog. He is without a doubt an American treasure, at least when it comes to his understanding of the constitution and the founding of the nation. He's a brilliant writer and is very detailed in his scholarship and sourcing for what he discusses in his books. Regardless of what you think of him as a radio host, he has a keen mind and is somehow able to make his point easily understood to the layman.

Yes, I've read a few of his books too. They're very good.

Clearly, the same people who liked Morton Downey, Jr. when he was on TV, or who watch Jerry Springer, or any of a number of other shows. And as for the "three hours straight", who keeps their radio turned on that long, except as background noise?
