Obnoxious WEEI advertisement

Note to Jason Wolfe:

We know your station is #1, but it would be such a nice Christmas
present to listeners to not air that obnoxious "get rid of the judges"
commercial with the voice louder than all the other already loud
commercials, and the "sanctity of marriage" being thrown in our
faces (by, no doubt, a bunch of divorced people on their third and
fourth attempts at being sanctified).

Please use some discretion in what you allow on the air - even if
it means turning away some greenbacks this Holiday season.

There are plenty of people willing to buy commercials on your
station.

Not only is the content bad, but the abrasive voice says TUNE OUT.

Heck, if yer gonna let bigotry on the air, at least have John Dennis
read the copy!

I mentioned this in the other WEEI thread here... I do agree... but it's the target audience...

That's Rep. Emil Goguen, I believe. I disagree with him on the marriage issue.
Interestingly enough, though, he says at one point that Judge Marshall and
those who agreed with her may have helped Bush win re-election ("many national
Democrats feel that this issue caused them to lose the Presidential election")
to which I say, to myself, "And this is bad?" Many of those who oppose
gay marriage might not necessarily have been wild about Kerry (sorry for
the political stuff) while many of those supporting it may not necessarily
have been wild about Bush.

Politics Makes Strange Bedfellows *

*--by the way there was a comedy album called "Comedy And Politics: Strange Bedfellows", oddly
enough, featuring Will Durst, Barry Crimmins, and Jimmy Tingle, put out in
1988. "Dukakis-Bush? Break out the No-Doz, man. I mean, I knew the meek
are supposed to inherit the Earth, but _this soon_?"--Will Durst, from that
album.

Well, maybe time to put out an ad "asking Rep. Emile Goguen" (heard on the
ad) "to resign". By the way, the following pic is of him, for those who
want to match the face with the voice (on the ad); from Mass. Citizens For
Marriage site.

On a quick side note....ever notice when you find someone saying "I am against gay people, I don't want no man looking at me..etc...., are usually so hideous that no sane man or woman would even want to look LOL

Anyhoo, reall subject at hand.....It's sad because I am a sports fan, who also happens to be gay and I think it's disgusting, one for not even giving a thought that they could be hurting someone with these ads, and two that "Wolfy" doesn't realize how many gay people listen to WEEI...believe me, I know alot of them.

Edited to add: In an evil way, I wish I worked for 'EEI so I could slap a lawsuit against them and Entercom for making me feel discriminated against in the workplace.
Edited by VTek33 on 12/07/05 02:10 PM.

Raccoon - that photo looks scary. He looks like a real cruiser.
Is he related to Jim West, the Spokane Mayor who was just outed?
Figures he'd make his radio debut in an advertisement.

Awwww, Chaammann Pal!...

...Gogin's spot is friggin' hilarious with all the DEMs DEEZs, and DOOZEs in his speech! Also that shrike who's married to the "Old Man" as she puts it (priceless) who was delighted when his daughter "married a black man" (what a sport). Where do these people come from? She's almost as annoying as BOB'S fake wife from the Bob's Furniture spots...Almost! SeeYa ;)

That's just sick! I tolerate heterosexual mattress testing, but I don't condone it.

LOL

> The Whiner Line should have a field day with this one! And the way WEEI looks at this - hey, their money is green like anyone elses....

There are three immediate problems with the current ad (apart from whether you agree with it or not):

1. Getting rid of the judges doesn't automatically overturn the ruling.
2. The petition to have a Defense of Marriage act on the ballot is a separate issue.
3. Attacking anyone who approches the issue from a religious perspective (BTW it's not just evangelical Christians and Catholics) is splintering your base.

Overall it's a very confusing spot. If they rotated a couple of spots (each dealing with one part of the message) they would be much better off.

When I was traffic manager at The River we would get political ads from both New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The rule was anytime we got a political order the GM, PD and Traffic Manager had to listen to the spot before it could go on the air. If the spot was defamatory towards a particular person (and we did get at least one, compairing a candidate to Hitler) we rejected it. (GM had the final say.) We did not reject spots soley on a topic. It's a touchy issue, and I'm glad I don't deal with political stuff too much anymore.

So what?

and I think it's

How could anyone be "hurt" with an ad? It's just speech. Free speech.

and two that
> "Wolfy" doesn't realize how many gay people listen to
> WEEI...believe me, I know alot of them.

Again, so what? Do you honestly think that stations or political advertisers believe that EVERYONE who listens agrees with xyz? And for the record just because one is gay does not mean that one is in favor of 'gay marriage' either.

Good luck finding an attorney to file THAT lawsuit. How would you claim to have been harmed? Where would the damages be found? WEEI is a radio station in the free speech business, and it's common in that business to accept money for political advertising. If someone sued everytime some political ad made them feel "discriminated" against than we might as well repeal Amendment #1. If you don't like it, feel free to buy time and run your own ad. I have to laugh when people who claim they are anti-discrimination wish to shove a sock in the mouth of and gag anyone who they don't agree with.

1. I wou have no problem finding many lawyers willing to take a case like that/

2. Free speech is one thing, Hate speech is something else.

AMEN!

by the way "Scott's Shots" at bostonsportsmedia.com says:

"Think about your typical ‘EEIdiot – Bud-drinking, gay-bashing, potentially politically active consumers – with at least some disposable income."

Well, I drink Bud. I like sports. I am politically active. But I don't gay bash.
I am not against gay marriage. Not all conservatives fall into the same
pattern; there are "South Park Conservatives" (like me?) who agree with the GOP
on many things, but disagree on issues like this. In some ways I might be an
old species called "Conservative Democrat", now rendered almost extinct by
the Michael Moore-ization of the party (and we become independents or
even Republicans)
______________
