Been working an odd schedule these last two weeks, resulting in being awake at 3am and thus whirling the dial at irregular times for me. Luckily, or not so luckily, depending on one's perspective, there are anomalies at night that either no one has noticed, no one has mentioned, or simply no one cares about. Let's hope that the latter isn't leading the pack.
Anyway, a couple of notes regarding my recent findings:
Something is terribly wrong with KCOH at night. 1230's audio drops to an unlistenable volume at night. There's the hum, as always, but the programming is so quiet that even with the volume cranked up, it's barely audible. I mentioned this a couple of weeks ago, but it is still ongoing. KCOH is fine during the day, it doesn't switch patterns or anything, so what's causing the audio level to drop into the nether regions? Wouldn't Liberman be required to make the necessary repairs? Why would Ben Hall put up with this, given the lease he is paying to Liberman? He's basically paying for 24 hour programming, but getting daytime operations only.
Speaking of daytime only...we find ourselves face to face with KCOH's old roost at 1430. When it gets dark here in Houston, so does KSHJ. They were operating 24/7 before, but lo and behold, two weeks worth of checking finds 1430 off the air at night and Tulsa's Buzz making its way down here to the Gulf coast. Is the listener base so miniscule for Catholic radio that La Promesa decided nighttime operation of 1430 is just not worth it? If that's the case, wouldn't it be more beneficial to them to lease out the night hours to someone else, as opposed to just shutting down every night?
1090 is back...in case you haven't noticed. Daytime only, so apparently message heeded. Chuck doesn't mess around, you mess with his stations, you apparently get dealt with swiftly.
Lastly, and yeah it's the wrong place for this observation, but to start an entirely new thread mentioning it? Nah....
What's happened at KAVU down yonder in Victoria? Did something change down there recently, and I missed it? Re-scanned the Digital converter box on my analog set wondering if KAHO had begun any testing and wa la! KAVU ABC 25, KMOL NBC at 25.2, KXTS CBS 41 at 25.3, and Accuweather on 25.4. I've never picked up KAVU in Houston, since the transition to digital. Now, here it is in all its glory...and apparently its here to stay. There yesterday, last night, and still watchable today, now here at just a hair past 1:30pm CST. Did it move closer to Houston? Increased the elevation?
