OC Register columnist on "talk radio colossus" Howie/Deval

Orange County Register columnist refers to Howie as a Boston "talk radio colossus" (and he'll even
get bigger on FM, sir!)--the writer cracked up when Howie described tough talkin' MA gov
Deval Patrick. Car swerved, he was laughing so badly, as Howie recounted the latest
statement from the man who can best be described as a cross between Wally Cox and Urkel.

The Howie mention is just at the start of the column, and it goes into other discussion of terrorists,
etc., but it shows the power of Howie in exposing MA politicians and what they can get away with.
If Howie weren't so provincial (with all the Menino stuff) he could have easily been a nationwide host
(for a time he actually was, in far-flung places like Seattle, Salt Lake City, Florida, Ohio, Maryland,
Wisconsin...even though he mis-pronounces the name of THAT state as "WESS-consin"..._

Not quite. And remember, while his "network" may fall silent in a few days, Howie has been on more stations
for a longer period of time than Severin has (Jay's national show only lasted 9 months and often got
pre-empted for sports in some cities). But it is true, even the best talk hosts will someday have to hang
it up and join with the retired talk radio producers who are out on Senior Discount Day at the Stop n Shop.

As Howie himself would say, "Do you know who I _WAS_?"

Puh-leez. The egotistical colossus will get his head handed to him in AM Drive in any demo short of God's Waiting Room. 8th place in 25-54 seems about right. He'll be about equidistant from Finneran and #1, I think. Closer to the former if WRKO ever properly accessorizes that show.

Exactly!. The only way Imus survived for all those years was by expanding the program beyond his limited capacity and infantile humor. Think, myself included, people turned on Imus not to listen to his drivel but to listen to guests no one else on morning radio would have. Carr could never attract anything but a cheap copy of "Fox Noise" with his coterie of like minded radicals right wingers. It might work for a book or two but in the long run it will be as disappointing as "Dice - Kay". Much promise, big salary and little to show for it on delivery.

maybe 5th or 6th due to the competition. Other than frequent mentions of his book, he's not all that
egotistical. Self-deprecating humor, just like "Talent on Loan from Oxys". Much better than Finneran,
in fact it'll give a real choice to poli-talk listeners (etc.)
