Ocala - Gainesville Radio Format Holes

Since we have an abundance of very knowledgeable radio professionals, both curent and former, who frequently contribute to the various discussions herein, I am curious and welcome your thoughts regarding what are the top three format holes in the Gainesville - Ocala market that: 1) will fill a definate void; and, 2) is economically viable? Consider the best format(s) for AM as well as FM, including the NCE-FM signals. And what signal(s) would you place the new format(s) on? Any why?

FM full market signal...which there aren't many...Hot AC. I know Q is trying it but a full market signal could pull from Gville (Kiss) too. Think Mix in Orlando. I would say the same about a Modern AC, which done right (similar to what I did at Star in Tampa), could serve as an alternative station for Gainesville and be mainstream enough to generate numbers in Ocala. The format was a media buyer darling...currents from Coldplay, Adele, Mumford and Sons, Linkin Park...mixed with 80s and 90s tracks that fit (U2, REM, Pearl Jam, Counting Crows, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc). And yes, play lots of Sister Hazel. I also like what Max98.3 is doing in Lakeland...Jack FM type deal.

Not sure it would sell well but a format like HOT 1015 in Tampa would kill there, just like it is doing here.

AM is tough. News Talk is filled by SKY and there are too many sports stations, so maybe soul or hispanic. Not sure there is a sales base for either.

Doesn't WKZY have a strong signal ? They've been a failure with Hot AC for years. Seems like people on this board have a real leaning for CHR/Hot AC.

Adult Alternative is SO OBVIOUS FOR GAINESVILLE !

WKZY has been Hot AC consistently for 2 years now and is steadily climbing.

WKZY has performed remarkably well over the past fews years although 106.9 has signal issues in Gainesville and does not cover the entire market, namely Ocala. If WKZY were to become a full market signal, I have no doubts 'KZY would perform even better in the MSA.

I agree Triple A is a good format choice for Gainesville but not Ocala due to the median age difference between the two communities. Gainesville has a much more younger diverse population than Ocala which makes Gainesville a better choice for AAA while Hot Adult Contemporary or CHR is a better choice for Ocala.

Also keep in mind there are a few additional format changes and adjustments on AM and FM coming to the MSA. I'm not at liberty to say which station(s) are affected nor what the new format(s) will be. I will, however, say stay tuned!

Guess I should ask what you consider to be a AAA? KFOG is triple A but plays a lot of classic rock....very 25-54. modern acs can play currents off the triple a chart (I did) but library is far more alternative lite. that's why i say modern ac more for gainesville, which can pick from aaa, alt, and hot ac chart for currents but keep a safe alt list for recurrents and gold. Sample hour:

Mumford and Suns-Little Lion Man (recurrent)
Fray –-Over My Head (gold)
Adele – Someone Like You (current)
The Script -Break Even (recurrent)
Red Hot Chili Peppers -Dani California (gold)
Daughtry -September (recurrent)
Linkin Park-Waiting For The End (recurrent)
Maroon 5- Moves Like Jagger (current)
No Doubt-It’s My Life (gold)
Kings of Leon-Use Somebody (recurrent)
Third Eye Blind- SemiCharmed Life (gold)
Train- Hey Soul Sister (recurrent)
Foster the People – Pumped Up Kicks (current)
Green Day- Blvd of Broken Dreams (gold)
Neon Trees –Animal (recurrent)
John Mayer- No Such Thing (gold)

Just having some fun....

WKZY plays all those songs (and then some) maybe not in that order-- but they play every single one of those records.

Just sayin...

That Guy...the difference is what you don't hear...no GaGa, Timberlake, Pink, Black Eyed Peas, Beyonce, etc. Modern AC is alternative light basically. Friendly enough for chicks but not so lame to still pull males...ends up 60/40 female/male. Golds can flash back to 80s bands like the Cure, Depeche Mode, U2, the 90s stuff like Dave Matthews, Alanis, Pearl Jam, Goo Goo Dolls, Counting Crows, Coldplay, into the 2k and now. You're right, KZY may have a lot of those songs in the library but what ruins the recipe is all the white top40 pop junk in the mix. Modern AC is a lot closer to AAA, which in most cases has a classic rock artist base...like I need to hear deep Clapton or Stones tracks. Gainesville is dying for an alt station but not sure the revenue support would be there. Modern AC would cume from stations in the market and pull bodies back from ipods...18-49. Image it like a KROQ but keep the music and cume friendly and not insanely current.

Rick, I understood what you're saying. You are right, the revenue support wouldn't be there for Modern AC or AAA.
