Duke Dumont "Ocean Drive", it's an obvious smash yet once again the weak chrs in the USA are not even on it yet. Any idiot knew that 21 pilots "Stressed out" was a hit 3 months ago yet just now are chrs starting to give it spins.
I really think it is worth a try for some low rated stations to try a chr format where you play the hits when they are new, rather than add them when they are already starting to burn. I would also do a bunch of well done mix shows like the kiis mix that air weekdays at noon on kiis, that hour is really the only time I can listen to an American chr as its the only time you don't get 100% played out music that's been burned into the ground.
The new music chr would be an ideal flanker to take down the big ratings chr a notch. You could be burning out all the songs that will be their bread and butter a couple months from now. By the time they do get around to adding these obvious hits they have already gotten some miles on them from the new music chr.
Now right now any monkey could program your average USA chr, the new music station would need a smart programmer. Everytime usa stations try the new music approach they strike out by playing stiffs, take the xm offering it is a total mess of non hits. Obviously jumping out ahead you are going to make some mistakes but you really gotta limit them as much as possible. I know for me personally, over the last 10 years, I'm a good 90 days ahead of chr radio and my misses to hits ratio is just a few percentage points off the chrs anyway. As long as you have someone who will be smart about it, someone with good ears, someone who can pick up on the trends worldwide and know what will work in the USA and what will not, you can put on a station that will hold its own and get some pretty nice under 35 demos, all the while messing with the heritage chr by playing their hits and burning them before they even know about them.
