October 14: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on October 14. Discuss or comment as you please……

1953: WROW-TV (channel 41) begins operations in Albany, New York. You know them much better (from 1957 on) as WTEN-TV on channel 10.

1961: A pre-dawn fire destroys the facilities of Boston’s WGBH-TV (channel 2) and its companion WGBH-FM. Despite the devastation, some important items are saved from the blaze, including most of the stations’ video and audio tape libraries, and a Greyhound bus that was in the process of being converted to a TV mobile unit. (For a bit more about this event, see this page.)

1963: WGHP (channel 8 ) begins broadcasting in High Point, North Carolina.

1967: Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith is born in The Bronx, New York.

1967: WWOM-TV (channel 26, now WGNO) signs on in New Orleans as Louisnana’s first independent station. It’s original calls stand for “The Wonderful World of Movies” and, indeed, apart from a few off-network discards, old movies will form the bulk of its programming for the first few years.

1968: The first live network video transmission from a spacecraft takes place as Apollo 7 sends the first in a series of six broadcasts.

1972: Kung Fu premieres on ABC.

1972: CHFD-TV (channel 4) signs on in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

1977: Actor/singer Bing Crosby dies, aged 74, of a massive heart attack in Madrid, Spain. The legendary crooner, vacationing in Iberia, collapsed after completing 18 holes of golf. It has been claimed that his less than profound last words were "That was a great game of golf, fellas."

1995: MADtv debuts on Fox.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

...now, that set of call letters is entirely understandable -- WTEN on Channel 10. Same for WTWO/2 Terre Haute IN, KTEN/10 Ada OK, KTWO/2 Casper WY, KIII/3 Corpus Christi, WFOR/4 Miami, KFOR/4 Oklahoma City, WSVN/7 Miami, WNIN/9 Evansville IN, KNIN/9 Boise ID, WXIA/11 Atlanta, WXII/12 Winston-Salem NC, KXII/12 Sherman TX, WXIX/19 Cleveland (and Milwaukee before that), WXXW/20 Chicago, WXXI/21 Rochester NY, and so on. Now, can someone please explain the idea behind putting WSIX on Channels 8 and 2 in Nashville and KSVN on Channel 49 in Ogden UT?...

The WSIX calls came from the original owners of WSIX-AM 980 (and later FM 98.5 and TV): The 638 Tire Company.

Seven times seven (7X7) perhaps? :D

Another local TV oversight dating to October 14, 1954.

KLTV-TV 7 begins broadcasting in Tyler,TX with joint primary affilaitions of all three networks (currently ABC primary since 1984). The station was owned by Lucille Buford who was the first woman to own a television station in East Texas. The second female and also the first African-American (Clara Mclaughlin) to own a TV station in East Texas followed almost 30 years later (KLMG-TV now KFXK-TV 51). To know about their history, go to www.kltv.com or look them up in Wikipedia.

Thought you can include this gem.

This political event would later have vast effects on 1980s television:

1982: President Ronald Reagan declares the "War on Drugs." This would be best exemplified in First Lady Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" campaign, which prompted "very special" episodes of shows including "Diff'rent Strokes," "Punky Brewster," and "Dynasty" emphasizing the dangers of drug abuse (including the March 1983 appearance by Nancy Reagan on an episode of "Diff'rent Strokes").

1979: Actress, model and former wrestler Stacy Keibler (WWE) is born in Baltimore, MD. She has also made appearances on series including Dancing with the Stars, What About Brian, and How I Met Your Mother.

According to the club pro who played with Crosby that day, Bing's last words, as they entered the clubhouse, and he spotted a vending machine and offered to buy, were, 'How about a Coke?'

The WSIX calls came from the original owners of WSIX-AM 980 (and later FM 98.5 and TV): The 638 Tire Company.

When WSIX-TV moved to Channel 2 in the 70's, they changed calls to WNGE(for Nashville General Electric, its owner at the time of the change). Channel 2 became the current WKRN-TV around 1983.
