October 2011 PPM's: The Zone Gets Bigger While The Game Gets Smaller

In first place for the second straight month (thanks, Titans) is 104.5 The Zone, nearly doubling the 4.5 rating they recorded just two months ago.

So how's the new "game" in town? In its second full book, 102.5 The Game has a 1.0 rating - good for 22nd place. But hey. at least they're beating WNSR (32nd place)!

Meanwhile, 103.3 WKDF is now actually the leader of the three country stations!

The annual football season lift is at work on the Zone's ratings. At least PPM is able to better measure what the station's ratings are. Of course The Game will rise in ratings starting next week when Willy Daunic is back on the air. The Zone will remain the top Sports station, but Willy will give the Game the boost. It will be interesting to have two good sports choices on the air at one time, as many of WIlly and George's contacts start cropping up on the Game.

Funny, but the Cumulus stations really DO cume less than their AQH ratings indicate. So The Game cumes the same number as a station with half the AQH. How do you explain that to a client? Dedicated listeners?

Cumulus will do what it always does and have those two "new" stations sucking this time next year.

Game OVER. My advice would be to downgrade the power, move into Nashville, and pick a format that doesn't exist. Except for Hot AC. Doesn't work in this town I guess.

(An "off-topic" note: Whoever puts that PPM chart up, Jack FM is not Classic Hits, it's Adult Hits. There's a big difference. Classic Hits stations don't play Madonna, Creed, Bowling for Soup, Janet Jackson, A-Ha, or Third Eye Blind. The formats are similar and do share some of the same music, but they are not one in the same.)

Hot AC might work on a good enough signal. Worth noting that 102.5 was NOT officially hot AC prior to becoming the Game. But that frequency itself is jinxed here.

By the way, 92.9 has been picking up hot AC music ever since 102.5 dropped V-102.5 over three years ago.

As much as I love "BigJoe", he and Willy will have an uphill battle against 3HL. Frankly, I think Thom Abraham is better than either but it's a shame he's on AM with a weak signal.

I'm a little worried with Cumulus pulling the strings though.

And yeah, whoever runs the football games will get the ratings. Hockey does not translate well on the radio like football or baseball.

Willie 'n' Joe will be a solid number two sports show to 3HL and the first serious alternative for the Zone (Sorry WNSR, it's just true). But, like in so many Titans games, the Zone will have to start making big mistakes on its own before it will lose its number one sports station status.

As the boldfaced artist once asked, when did Motley Crue become classic rock? ::)

I have listened to baseball on the radio, and I would think that with all the pauses during the game, it wouldn't be so great either. Seems like basketball would be the best, because you have the background noise of sneakers squeaking on the gym floor, and cheerleaders cheering.

The fall of the zone RADIO can be said in one word.Cumulus!
Corrected that one for you! ;D Still, I would hate to know that (if I were a real sports fan) I would have to rely on a CROMWELL station for sports coverage! Everything about them just screams amateurish!

I was listening to the Alabama-LSU game Saturday night while running errands...and was
more than a little surprised when I got back in the car to find 102.5 carrying the Preds pre-game broadcast instead of the second half of the football game. I understand the Preds contracts, etc...and realize
that 102.5 has a contract to carry Alabama football...but why would
you even bother to carry a game that you know you won't be able to finish?

I want to counterpoint your statement by providing this rephrasing: "Everything about them just screams independent!" And that's what I've enjoyed in the more recent years about 102.9. In so many ways they bring back memories of late nights with friends in the studio, tracking those looong album cuts to keep the party going between breaks. Consultants and corporations sure changed things for the worst, huh?

I've always been very UNDERwhelmed by the Buzz, to the point that I can't even keep them in my car presets. Maybe if I liked "modern" rock... ::)

Seems like a question that Alabama should be asking. If the school is PAYING for their games to be broadcast and then it's pre-empted for the Preds, then I'd wonder if someone is double dipping at the sports cash bar. I have no inside knowledge of as to whether Alabama is paid programming, but it does seem strange that they carry a partial game and then run someone else's programming which is clearly purchased and paid for by the Predators. Presumably, Alabama gets a makegood down the road.

Contract or not, I think its STUPID to carry a Preds game over a big SEC game. Especially if you're a new sports station trying to gain ground.

I'm sure the Preds have the "first spot" on the station by contract.I know when I was at The Zone Vandy had this for all of it's broadcasts, even the Monday call in show and we had to carry it. This would rub the Preds and some fans the wrong way but at the time Vandy would not budge from this.
Some my remember when I had to drop out of a race to get "Big Orange Sunday" on the air...not a fun spot to be in but you do what you have to do...

Anyone know if they have an HD channel? I'm wondering if they moved the conclusion of the game over to an HD channel, if they have one, and if so, did they make an announcement to that effect? I don't have an HD radio, so I wouldn't know.
